La Capelle is a French commune with 1,788 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Vervins and the canton of Vervins . The inhabitants are called Capellois .
geography
La Capelle is located in the Thiérache countryside . La Capelle is surrounded by the neighboring communities of La Flamengrie in the north, Clairfontaine in the east, Sommeron in the southeast, Froidestrées and Gergny in the south, Lerzy in the southwest and Buironfosse in the west.
Route nationale 2 and the former route nationale 29 (today D1029) and 43 (today D1043) run through the municipality .
history
The village is said to have been founded in the 4th century by the holy Grimonie (an Irish princess and martyr).
On November 7, 1918, Matthias Erzberger arrived here with the German Armistice Commission for the negotiations for the surrender and stayed at the Villa Pasque, from there to the clearing of Rethondes and on November 11 in the Compiègne railroad car to deliver the armistice document sign.
From 1793 until the nationwide reorganization of the cantons in 2015, La Capelle was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of La Capelle .
