La La Land is an American feature film by Damien Chazelle from the year 2016 . The film musical is based on an original script by director Chazelle and is divided into four chapters (“Winter”, “Spring”, “Summer”, “Autumn”) and a staggered epilogue (5 years later, “Winter”). It centers on an ambitious jazz pianist (played by Ryan Gosling ) and an aspiring actress (played by Emma Stone ) who both strive for professional success in Los Angeles and fall in love in the process. The title of the film refers to the nickname of the city of Los Angeles as well as a euphemistic description of a unrealistic state of mind.

La La Land opened the competition at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2016 . A limited theatrical release in the USA took place on December 2, 2016. In Germany , the film was released on January 12, 2017. The musical, shot in Cinemascope format, won more than 200 awards in the 2016/17 American film awards season and set a new record with seven prizes at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards . When the Oscar nominations were announced in 2017 , the record number of 14 nominations followed and ultimately wins in six categories, including for director Chazelle and leading actress Stone.

action

In Los Angeles the presence of the pianist Sebastian and aspiring actress Mia. Sebastian live revered jazz legends as Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk and dreams of his own jazz club to open. However, he makes his living doing odd jobs as a keyboard player or restaurant pianist. Mia loves the cinema and tries to gain a foothold in Hollywood . While she unsuccessfully shuffles from audition to audition, she works in a cafe on the Warner Bros. -Studio grounds.

Sebastian and Mia had met three times over the winter and spring. During a night trip to the planetarium, they fall head over heels in love, and Mia moves in with Sebastian. However, their relationship is severely tested by professional disappointments and compromises. Through his high school friend Keith, Sebastian found a connection to a soul and jazz band called The Messengers . Although he is not really convinced of their music and is separated from Mia more and more often because of touring, the job as a keyboardist gives him financial security. He is therefore planning to tour with the band on a long-term basis instead of pursuing his dream. Mia criticizes this attitude after going to a concert. After the role offers continue to fail, she works, spurred on by Sebastian, on her own semi-autobiographical one-woman show “So Long, Boulder City”.

Sebastian missed a one-woman show in the theater due to a photo shoot with the band Mias. This is only attended by a handful of interested people and then discussed very negatively by some viewers. The two then fall out and Mia moves back to live with her parents in Boulder City , Nevada . When an agent calls Sebastian because of Mia's theater appearance and wants to invite Mia to an audition, Sebastian drives to Boulder City. He persuades Mia to return to Los Angeles and take this opportunity. In fact, Mia gets the long-awaited leading film role, for which she would have to live in Paris for several months . Although both still have feelings for each other, Sebastian and Mia decide after a year of relationship to forego private happiness.

Five years later, Mia has become a well-known and busy film actress who lives in New York with her husband and toddler . The family spends time in Los Angeles. When Mia and her husband go out one evening, by chance they come to the jazz club that Sebastian has since opened under the name "Seb's", as Mia had once suggested. Both perceive each other, whereupon Sebastian starts a common piece of music from the time of their relationship at the piano. In a dream sequence it is shown how a common future of the two could have looked. Mia and her husband wistfully decide to leave the club. Shortly before the exit, Sebastian and Mia's glances meet one last time and they smile at each other.

background

Director Damien Chazelle during the filming.

The director and screenwriter Damien Chazelle stated in an interview published in early January 2015 with the British Daily Telegraph La La Land as a "heart project" and described it as if " Gene Kelly meets Thelonious Monk ". According to his own account, he had written the script four years earlier and had worked on the background music with his former fellow student from Harvard , Justin Hurwitz . He had already used Hurwitz in his feature film debut Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009), also a film musical about jazz, as well as the musical film Whiplash (2014), Chazelle's breakthrough , which received three Oscars . In terms of style, both were based not only on jazz, but also on classic Hollywood film musicals such as Singin 'in the Rain (1952), A New Star in the Sky (1954), Blondes Preferred (1953) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) ), as well as the French Nouvelle Vague and the French film musical Die Regenschirme von Cherbourg (1964). It was planned to pre-record the songs contained in La La Land , in the style of the old MGM films with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers : "[...] we just tried to convince someone to do an original MGM-style musical, because I think there isn't enough of it, ”says Chazelle.

The film's main characters: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling

Miles Teller and Emma Watson were originally intended to star in the lead roles of Sebastian and Mia . Teller previously starred in Whiplash . As a fan of the Harry Potter franchise, Chazelle originally wanted to work with Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the films . Watson dropped out of the film project after she was selected as Belle in the real-life version of Beauty and the Beast (2017). Teller was replaced by the better-known Canadian actor Ryan Gosling , while the role of Mia went to the American Emma Stone . For Gosling and Stone it was the third collaboration as a screen couple after Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) and Gangster Squad (2013). As with Whiplash, JK Simmons played a strict character.

Ryan Gosling learned to play the piano for three months for the film. The musician John Legend learned to play the guitar for the film .

The film was produced by Lions Gate in collaboration with Black Label Media, Gilbert Films and Marc Platt Productions . For Chazelle it should be the last jazz or music film as a director for the time being.

The film to over 60 was recorded original locations in Los Angeles, including the Griffith Observatory (location for the James Dean film ... for they know not what they do , the Mia and Sebastian View in the cinema), the spaghetti-node the freeways 105 and 110 and the historic Angels Flight funicular . On the studio premises, Mia Sebastian points out a backdrop for the film Casablanca with Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart - in Mia's shared room there is also a photo wallpaper with Bergman's face.

The film was first shown on German free TV on February 24, 2019 on ProSieben .

reception

criticism

Even before it was released, the film was considered a possible Oscar candidate for the 2017 awards by various media . Alberto Barbera , director of the Venice Film Festival, saw in La La Land a "surprising homage to the golden age of American film musicals, from An American in Paris to Vincente Minnelli to New York, New York from Martin Scorsese ". Chazelle's directorial work is not only a film that has "reinvented" the musical genre, he gives it a "brand new start". "If Whiplash was the revelation of a new filmmaker, La La Land is his final, if precocious, consecration among the great directors of Hollywood's new firmament," said Barbera. Most of the specialist critics agreed with this assessment and gave very positive ratings. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film currently (as of January 2017) has a rating of 93 percent, based on over 200 reviews and an average rating of 8.7 / 10. The conclusion of the site is: “ La La Land is bringing new life to a bygone genre with exciting directing, powerful acting and an irresistible excess of heart.” On Metacritic the film also received a rating of 93 percent, based on 53 reviews . In the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), La La Land received an average of 8.7 / 10 points from viewers.

For Julia Hackober from the daily newspaper Die Welt , La La Land is overall not a “romantic” film, despite the many romantic elements it contains. On the contrary: He holds the mirror up to Generation Y , to whom the audience mostly belongs. In the end there is no typical Hollywood happy ending. It turns out that the realization of career dreams and dreams of the "great love" in real life are all too often not realizable at the same time. Julia Hackober praises the filmmakers for their courage in having resisted the temptation to tell a story that is "romantic" to the end and therefore not realistic.

The film journalist Leigh Singer recognizes inspiration in the film from “classic Technicolor equipment films from the showbiz milieu” (how you should be my lucky star or open the curtain! ) And “sung everyday fables like those by Jacques Demy ( The Umbrellas of Cherbourg )”. In Damien Chazelle's directorial work, he sees a “swinging declaration of love to his adopted home Los Angeles, peppered with loving allusions to its cinematic heritage, but also full of sympathy for the contradictions between love and professional ambition”. He feels the chemistry between the two main actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as coherent and the cinematography of Linus Sandgren as agile and poetic. For him, the final dream sequence is inspired, among other things, by An American in Paris .

Box office income and visitor numbers

The $ 30 million production has estimated gross box office receipts of over $ 151 million in the United States and Canada, while the film grossed more than $ 294 million in overseas gross receipts . With worldwide revenues of around 446 million US dollars, the film is one of the most successful film musicals of all time.

In Germany, La La Land attracted around 1.7 million visitors to the cinemas in 2017, making the film 15th in the list of the most popular films of the year.

Awards

La La Land won over 200 film awards by 2017 and was nominated for over 240 others. At the 2017 Golden Globe Awards , the film won prizes in all seven nominated categories, making it the most awarded film in the history of this film award. For the 2017 Oscars , La La Land received 14 nominations, drawing level with the previous record holders Everything About Eva (1950) and Titanic (1997). The film ultimately won six Academy Awards, but could not prevail against the drama Moonlight in the Best Picture category . La La Land had previously been awarded the prize by mistake due to a reversed envelope.

There was also a scandal at the 2017 Golden Camera award when, as expected, not the main actor Ryan Gosling, but a doppelganger accepted the award in the category “Best International Film” created by the organizers. This had been smuggled in by the creators of the television program Circus HalliGalli .
