List of “Art of Fiction” interviews by the Paris Review

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list of “Art of Fiction” interviews by the Paris Review includes the interviews with contemporary authors - established artists as well as “newcomers” to the literary business - which the American literary magazine The Paris Review has published in every issue since its inception in the spring of 1953.

The series began with interviews on narrative literature (The Art of Fiction) , the first interview partner was the novelist EM Forster . Between 1953 and 2018, a total of 247 authors were interviewed in this section. (Status: autumn 2018)

1959, TS Eliot, was the first time a poet was interviewed. In the order established new series The Art of Poetry (The Art of Poetry) published until 2018. 102 interviews. 1965 began with the interview Lillian Hellman's the series The Art of Theater (The Art of the drama) , continued with 17 interviews. (Status: autumn 2018)

Occasionally, other categories were also opened, which were continued sporadically: 1969: The Art of the Essay (The Art of essays ) ; 1983: The Art of Publishing (The art of laying ) ; 1984: The Art of Translation (The art of translating ) ; 1985: The Art of Biography (The art of biography ) ; 1991: The Art of Criticism (The art of criticism ) ; 1994: The Art of Editing (The Art Editor ) ; 1995: The Art of Humor (The art of humor) ; 1996: The Art of Screenwriting (The art of screenplay ) ; 1997: The Art of the Musical (The art of musicals ) ; 1999: The Art of the Diary (The art of diary ) ; 2000: The Art of Journalism (The art of journalism) ; 2006: The Art of Nonfiction (The art of non-fiction book) ; 2009: The Art of Memoir (The art of memoir ) ; 2010: The Art of Comics (The Art of Comics ) ; 2018: The Art of Documentary (The Art of the documentation) .

An exception was the reproduction of the theoretical texts by John Steinbeck, also archived with the “interviews”, in editions 48/1969 and 63/1975. The self-presentation of his poetological positions is not the result of an interview, but an editorial compilation of various, partly posthumous published writings. Steinbeck is one of the few authors who are represented in two issues of the magazine, four other American authors were interviewed twice, each with an interval of several decades: Irwin Shaw (issues 4/1953 and 75/1979), William Styron (5 / 1954 and 151/1999), Norman Mailer (31/1964 and 181/2007) and Arthur Miller (38/1966 and 152/1999).

Lists of "Art of Fiction" interviews

Note (as of 2018)

The numbering of the series The Art of Fiction follows - like those of all other interview categories on this list - the original numbering of the interviews in the online archive of the Paris Review . However, this archive does not consistently count for the interviews on the art of storytelling:

Number 22 (summer 1958) exists twice (autumn-winter 1958); number 53 (autumn 1975) is followed by 59 (winter 1975); number 73 (spring 1979) is followed by 64 (autumn 1979); number 71 (autumn 1982) is followed by 62 (winter 1982); this has been corrected, the sequential number 63 (winter 1982) is followed by 74 (spring 1983). The older counting errors were retained, and since 1983 the interviews in this category have also been continued without further counting errors.

As a result, up to 1983 there had been 5 more interviews on Art of Fiction than the archive numbered; the interview with Heinrich Böll (spring 1983) was therefore not the 74th but the 80th in the column on the art of storytelling; accordingly, the interview with Penelope Lively (fall 2018) was not the 241st, but the 247th in this category. The other categories of interviews are not affected.
