List of film adaptations of Jane Austen's works
The list of film adaptations of Jane Austen's works is intended to provide an overview of the cinema and television adaptations of works by the British writer Jane Austen that have been published to date .
Film adaptations were made particularly frequently on behalf of the BBC , which produced its first television film based on Austen's pride and prejudice as early as 1938 . Shortly thereafter, Austen was discovered by Hollywood , where the same novel was first staged for the big screen in 1940. Over the years numerous TV adaptations , mostly multi-part and filmed in England, followed . It was not until the mid-1990s that further films were made that used Austen's novels as literary models. Four feature films were released between 1995 and 1996 alone, including Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility and the American teen comedy Clueless - What Else!as a modern version of Austen's Emma . From 2000, also created three Bollywood - film musicals based on Austen's novels such as Bride and Prejudice (2004). The list also includes biographies of films about the author, such as mistress Jane , which are mainly based on letters from Austen.
Pride and prejudice was by far the most frequently adapted, including in 1995 as the BBC multi-part series of the same name , which, in addition to the novel, inspired Helen Fielding in her Bridget Jones novels through its main actor Colin Firth in the role of Mr. Darcy . Firth eventually played the role of Mark Darcy in the fielding adaptations Bridget Jones - Chocolate For Breakfast (2001) and Bridget Jones - On the Edge of Wahnsinns (2004), which, however, do not have sufficient references to Austen to be included in the list become. The Austen parody Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) based on the novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, with its independent literary source, is also not part of the list.
