The Markatal is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Friesoythe in the district of Cloppenburg and the municipality of Vrees in the integrated municipality of Werlte in the district of Emsland .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 296 is around 97  hectares in size. Of this, around 72 hectares are in the Cloppenburg district and around 25 hectares in the Emsland district. The nature reserve is to a large extent part of the FFH area "Markatal mit Bockholter Dose". To the north it borders on the nature reserve " Marka between Markhausen and Delschloot " and the landscape protection area "Markatal between Markhausen and Ellerbrock", to the south on the nature reserve " Markatal bei Bischofsbrück " and the landscape protection area "Mittelradde-Marka-Südradde" and to the southwest the protected landscape area "forest areas on the Hümmling".

The Protected Areas Ordinance was revised in October 2018 and came into force on January 1, 2019. It replaced the old ordinance of June 21, 1984 (old sign of the nature reserve: NSG WE 150). In the new version of the Protected Area Ordinance, the boundaries of the nature reserve were partially redefined. Parts of the landscape protection area "Forest areas on the Hümmling" were merged into the nature reserve. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Cloppenburg and Emsland.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Friesoythe in a ground moraine landscape on the edge of the Hümmling Nature Park. The nature reserve, about 3.5 km long valley area of Marka protects the undeveloped and near-natural, meandering section of the Geest bach with his depression . The Marka as a lively flowing body of water with flooding underwater vegetation made up of swimming pondweed , water cockfoot and water star is mostly accompanied by woody plants and partly by riparian forests . Moist tall herbaceous vegetation can be found on the banks . The Marka flows through part of the Eleonorenwald southwest of Markhausen . Oak forests with English oak are predominant here. These are joined by sessile oak and, depending on the location, sand and down birch , mountain ash and quivering poplar . Parts of the protected area are occupied by swamps with thread sedge and fever clover or reed beds and swamp forests as well as bog forests. The bog forests are shaped by the bog birch and are rich in peat moss . In places, grasslands can be found, some of which are characterized by species-rich nebulas . The grasslanders are used as pasture or hay meadows . Remnants of the natural birch-oak forest can still be found on the beach .

The Marka is the habitat of river and brook lamprey .
