About this picture

Schönberg (Holstein) is a community in the provost in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein on the Bay of Kiel . The residential and holiday resort is about 20 km northeast of the state capital Kiel . The municipality, which had been free until then, joined the provost office on January 1, 2008 , which was already located in Schönberg.

Geography and traffic

The community of Schönberg is located on the Baltic Sea, around 20 kilometers northeast of the state capital Kiel and around 30 kilometers north of the district town of Plön . In addition to the core town of Schönberg, about three kilometers from the coast, the districts of Neuschönberg, Schönberger Strand , Brazil, California and Holm are in the municipality. The names "Brazil" and "California" go back to traditional beach names; the name "California" originated from the parts of a ship called "California" that were washed up on the beach. From 1914 to 1975 Schönberg was the station of the Kiel-Schönberger Railway , which is currently being reactivated.

history

Schönberg around 1895

In 1226 the Holstein ruler Count Adolf IV gave the northern part of today's Plön district to the Benedictine monastery in Preetz . This area has since been provost named because it was under the administration of the monastery provost. Between 1245 and 1250 founded the abbot of the monastery Preetz, Probst Friedrich, the place Sconeberg what "beautiful mountain" means. Before that there was probably a Slavic settlement there. Most of the villagers worked in agriculture. It was characteristic of the Probsteier farmers, however, that they were personally free and not serfs; they only had to pay taxes to the monastery.

To protect the place, it was secured to the outside with a brushwood fence; there were two entrances: in the south the “Höhndorfer Tor” in the direction of Preetz and in the east the “Stakendorfer Tor” in the direction of Feldmark.

The first sacred building in the village was a St. George's Chapel (built in 1220), west of Fernwisch . However, the chapel was destroyed in a storm flood . The baptismal font of the chapel is now in the tower of the Protestant church.

In 1600 the population was 350 to 400. On February 10, 1625, a heavy storm flood in the Baltic Sea hit the provost. This was devastating for the population as there were no dikes on the beach.

On the night of August 2nd to 3rd, 1779, a large part of the village burned down, as did the Lutheran church (probably a wooden church). Thanks to generous donations from the Barsbek farmers, the reconstruction was able to take place relatively quickly, so that the baroque church that still stands today was inaugurated on September 22, 1782. The chief architect was the master builder in Kiel , Johann Adam Richter , a student of Ernst Georg Sonnin . The Schönberg church is considered his journeyman, the church in Kappeln his masterpiece. What is striking is the similarity of the two churches, among other things to recognize from their facades. In gratitude for the support of the Barsbeck farmers, a perch (as a symbol of Barsbek) was placed on the top of the church tower instead of a weathercock.

The catastrophic storm flood of the Baltic Sea in 1872 also caused considerable damage in Schönberg, so that a permanent dike was installed from 1880 to 1882.

When the railway line to Kiel , which was rapidly developing into a large city, was opened in 1897 , Schönberger Strand began to develop into a seaside resort. As early as 1910, around 7,000 tourists came to the town, which now has a population of 1500, on summer days. A pier was also built, but it was demolished after 1914 because of fear of the landing of enemy soldiers during the First World War.

Today, Schönberg records around 70,000 overnight guests and over 420,000 day visitors from all over Germany each year in summer.

Schönberg train station

Public transportation

In 1887, the railway operation on the Kiel – Schönberger Strand railway line was initially put into operation by the Kiel-Schönberger Eisenbahn (KSE) to Schönberg (Holst) . In 1914 the route was extended from Schönberg (Holst) to Schönberger Strand due to the high demand and for a better connection to the swimming pool operations. During the Second World War, the line served military purposes, such as a possible supply of supplies, including at the Stakendorf stop for the bunker systems located there.

Regular passenger traffic was discontinued on May 31, 1975; since then, buses of the Plön District Transport Authority (VKP) on routes 200/201 and 210 have been running on the route to the state capital. The Kiel - Schönberg railway line is only used for freight traffic; VVM museum trains run between Schönberg and Schönberger Strand in the summer months .

There are further bus connections to Laboe , Lütjenburg , Preetz and Plön.
