The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 24th time in 1916/17 . It was also the 27th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 19, 1916 and ended on April 28, 1917. In the 1916/17 season, 20 clubs competed against each other in a total of 38 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the clubs (with the same number of points) were placed tied.

The championship won for the 14th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The top scorer was Bert Yarnall from Airdrieonians FC with 39 goals . At the end of the season, the league leadership asked the three northernmost clubs in the league, Dundee FC and Aberdeen FC , as well as the Raith Rovers to interrupt their participation in order to reduce the increasing transport difficulties during the war . In their place, the FC Clydebank was added so that the even number of participating teams was retained.
