Location of the local community Urbar in the Mayen-Koblenz district

Urbar is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Vallendar and is located on the right bank of the Rhine north of Koblenz .

Arable was already a settlement area around 13,000 years ago, making it one of the first in the region. With the establishment of the Limes , the area around Urbar belonged to the Roman Empire .

In 1167 Urbar was first mentioned in writing with the name "overvare", which means "crossing". This indicates a ferry across the Rhine to Neuendorf. The ruler was the Elector of Trier until 1803 . This state rule (red cross on a white background) and the Rhine ferry are shown in the local coat of arms.

The Besselich Franciscan Monastery , founded in 1496, was able to hold out until 1803 despite the Reformation , the chaos of war and numerous famines. The location of Urbar in the run-up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress repeatedly led to destruction and looting. From the Middle Ages until the 1950s there was a clay pit south of the village, from which numerous clay tiles in buildings in the Koblenz area originate. 1803 came Urbar to the Principality of Nassau-Weilburg (since 1806 Duchy of Nassau); After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Urbar became part of the Rhine Province of Prussia and the mayor's office of Ehrenbreitstein. When this was dissolved in 1937, the place came to the Office Vallendar-Land, since 1970 Verbandsgemeinde Vallendar. The local Catholics belonged to the parish of St. Pankratius in Koblenz-Niederberg until 1944 and have since formed their own parish. The Protestants are members of the Evangelical Church Community Koblenz-Pfaffendorf .

The destruction of the Catholic neo-Gothic village church (19th century) in 1945 had a decisive impact on the village image. An emergency church was built in Kirchstrasse, which was converted into a community center in 1967 and demolished in 2005. In 1966, according to plans by the architect Martin Ufer ( Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein ), the new cath. Parish church of St. Peter and Paul with its characteristic tent roof and windows by the important glass painter Paul Weigmann (Leverkusen) on the street In den Büngerten. It was profaned on July 1, 2014 , and demolition began in August 2015. A chapel is to be built in their place.

The population has been growing steadily since the end of the war. In 1994 a number of 2858 inhabitants was reached. The tendency is rising sharply because of several new development areas.

The eastern overhead line mast of the Rhine overhead line crossing Koblenz-Niederwerth-Urbar is located in Urbar .
