Teplice nad Metují (German Wekelsdorf , also Weckelsdorf ) is a town on the Metuje ( Mettau ) in the East Bohemian Okres Náchod , Královéhradecký kraj ( Czech Republic ).
geography
Teplice lies between the Giant Mountains and the Falken Mountains on the eastern edge of the Adršpach-Weckelsdorf rock town . Neighboring towns are Meziměstí and Bohdašín in the northeast, Police and Žďár in the southeast, Stárkov and Česká Metuje in the south, Dolní Vernéřovice ( Unter Wernersdorf ) and Jívka in the southwest and Janovice in the west. To the south-west are the ruins of the Skály Castle ( Bischofstein ), to the south-east is the Ostaš nature reserve .
history
The first written mention dates from the year 1362, in which the place is mentioned for the first time under the name "Guweynsdorf alias Teplicz" in the confirmation books founded by the Prague Archbishop Ernst von Pardubitz . The place then belonged to Tas von Riesenburg .
The Wekelsdorf market had 1205 inhabitants on December 1, 1930, 1199 on May 17, 1939 and 842 on May 22, 1947.
In June 1945 Czech soldiers shot and killed 23 Sudeten Germans above the town on the Buková hora , whom the Polish authorities had previously denied access to the border with Silesia.
The end of August, the town hosts the International Mountaineers film festival MHFF ( Mezinárodní horolezecký filmový festival held).

Attractions
- The St. Laurentius Church was built in 1724 in Baroque style for Johann Straka von Nedabylice ( Jan Straka z Nedabylic ).
- The Renaissance chateau was built in 1599 under Wenceslaus Bohdanecky von Hodkow (Václav Bohdanecký z Hodkova). Today it serves as the town hall.
- The lower castle was built in 1664 by Sigmund Schmiedl von Schmieden ( Zikmund Schmiedl ze Schmieden ).
- The pilgrimage church Maria Hilf was built between 1754 and 1763.
