William Kennedy (1914)

William Kennedy (born December 19, 1854 in Naugatuck , Connecticut , †  June 19, 1918 there ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Kennedy attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1879, he began to practice in Naugatuck in his new profession. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1896, 1900, 1908 and 1912 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . Kennedy served in the Connecticut Senate from 1899 to 1901 ; from 1901 until his death in 1918 he was a member of the education committee in his hometown of Naugatuck. From 1893 he was also the legal representative of this city.

In the 1912 congressional election, Kennedy was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Connecticut , where he succeeded Republican John Q. Tilson on March 4, 1913 . Since he lost to James P. Glynn in the next election in 1914 , Kennedy could only serve one term in Congress . During this time, the 17th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which required direct election of US Senators .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, William Kennedy worked again as a lawyer. He died on June 19, 1918 in his native Naugatuck.
