Ștefan Dobay or - Hungarian - István Dobay (born September 26, 1909 in Újszentes , Austria-Hungary (today Dumbrăvița , Timiș County , Romania ); † April 7, 1994 in Târgu Mureș ) was a Romanian football player and coach of Hungarian descent. He played 160 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1934 World Cup and the 1938 World Cup.

Player career

Ștefan Dobay began his career at Banatul Timișoara , which took part in the Timișoara regional championship, as the professional league Divizia A was only founded in 1932. In 1930 he joined the professional team Ripensia Timișoara , which initially did not take part in the Romanian championship because only amateur teams were allowed. But in 1932 it was a founding member of Divizia A and became the most successful club of the 1930s. Dobay won the Romanian championship four times and the Romanian Cup twice with Ripensia until 1940. He was also the top scorer four times . Dobay then moved to Hungary before returning to Romania after World War II and ending his career in 1948.

National team

Dobay played a total of 41 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored 19 goals. His first use took place on May 25, 1930 as part of the Balkan Cup 1929–31 against Greece . Dobay participated in the 1934 World Cup in Italy and the 1938 World Cup in France, where he entered all games and scored a goal in every game.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Dobay started a career as a coach. Already in the 1947/48 season he was the player-coach of his club Gaz Metan Mediaș . He then took over his hometown club CFR Timişoara in Divizia A , before moving to league rivals Locomotiva Târgu Mureş , whom he coached first in the 1950 season and later from 1952 to 1953. 1954 took over Dobay Dinamo Oraşul Stalin , before he hired again at the beginning of the 1955 season in Târgu Mureş. In the summer of 1955 he signed the Romanian top club CCA Bucharest (later Steaua Bucharest). With CCA he won the championship once and the cup once. After two one-year engagements at UTA Arad and CFR Cluj , he ended his coaching career in 1960 for health reasons and settled in Târgu Mureș . In 1968, Minerul Bălan made it to Divizia C for the first time in its history , whereupon Dobay was asked by the club's management to take over the training. After a few games, however , the club from Bălan finished last in the 8th series of the league, whereupon Dobay ended his engagement after a few months.
