The 33rd ceremony of Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 3, 2018 on the beach in Santa Monica , California instead. The members of the non-profit organization Film Independent honored what they considered to be the best independent films of the 2017 cinema year .

The nominations were announced on November 21, 2017 by actresses Lily Collins and Tessa Thompson . The feature film Call Me by Your Name by Luca Guadagnino , which had prizes in six categories, was nominated most frequently , followed by Jordan Peele's Get Out and Benny and Josh Safdie's Good Time (five nominations each). Get Out was named the best film of the year and also received the directing award. In addition to Call Me by Your Name, the biopic I, Tonya and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, also received two awards . At the four previous awards of the Independent Spirit Awards (2014–2017), the winner in the “ Best Filmcategory agreed with the eventual Oscar winner in the same category . A total of 44 film productions were nominated for an award.

The award ceremony was broadcast on the US TV station IFC and on the video-on-demand service Facebook Watch . Nick Kroll and John Mulaney , who had already taken on the task the year before, were selected as moderators .
