Location of the Tolkewitz district in Dresden
Drinking water protection area on the Elbe near Tolkewitz
Dresden-Tolkewitz, Elbwiesenweg

Tolkewitz has been a district of Dresden since 1912 . It is located on the Elbe upstream of the city center. In its old village center (Alttolkewitz) it is one of the old fishing villages along the Elbe. Today one of the largest waterworks in the city is located on the Elbe , which was opened in 1898. That is why there is a drinking water protection area on the Elbe meadows near Tolkewitz .

While the center of Alttolkewitz is part of the statistical district of Laubegast and is therefore already part of the district of Leuben , the majority of the district of Tolkewitz (Neutolkewitz) together with the north of neighboring Seidnitz forms the statistical district of Tolkewitz / Seidnitz-Nord and belongs to the district of Blasewitz .

Tolkewitz was first mentioned in 1350 as "tolkenwicz". The thread merchant Christian Gärtner , who became famous as the comet discoverer and mentor to the Prohlisers Palitzsch in the middle of the 18th century, lived in Alttolkewitz. In Tolkewitzer Tännicht , the well-known Johannisfriedhof was created by various communities. In 1894 Paul Wallot created the chapel of the cemetery . Between 1909 and 1911, the crematorium was built as an Art Nouveau building based on plans by Fritz Schumacher , based on the Theodoric's tomb in Ravenna . Famous personalities found their final resting place at the Johannisfriedhof.

Between 1936 and 1937, the Alttolkewitz residential complex was built right next to the village center in a traditional, homeland-related style, which, however, still has its own charm today, also highlighted by the renovation in the 1990s.

Tolkewitz is now part of the mansion districts of Dresden.
