As the Grand Prix of the Netherlands ( Dutch Grote Prijs van Nederland ), an automobile race has officially been held 32 times near the Dutch municipality of Zandvoort , which has so far counted 30 times in the automobile and Formula 1 world championships .

history

Location of Zandvoort

Since the 1950s, this Grand Prix has always taken place in Zandvoort, directly on the North Sea coast, on the Circuit Park Zandvoort racing course leading through the dunes .

The first race in the Formula 1 World Championship was held in the 1952 season, the last so far in the 1985 season .

In 1950 and 1951 there were already two races with Formula 1 vehicles in Zandvoort, but they were not part of the official championship ranking . Frenchman Louis Rosier won both races in a Talbot .

Since the route no longer met safety standards after 1971, it was rebuilt and only added to the Formula 1 calendar in 1973. A new chicane called Panorama had been added, but despite the new standards, driver Roger Williamson died in the race. In 1979 another chicane was added. In 1980 the German racing driver Hans-Georg Bürger had a fatal accident here . In 1998 the course was extensively renovated, in which the route was shortened to 4.26 km. The famous curves Tarzanbocht, Hugenholtzbocht and Scheivlak have been preserved in their original form.

In 2019 it was announced that Formula 1 will return to the Netherlands for at least three years from 2020. From the end of 2019 to the beginning of 2020, extensive changes were made to Circuit Park Zandvoort for the Formula 1 return. Among other things, the curves Hugenholtzbocht and Arie Luyendijkbocht have been converted into concave steep curves , where the last curve has an incline of up to 32 percent (18 degrees). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the organizers announced in May 2020 that the race would be completely canceled. The comeback is postponed to 2021.

The record winner is Jim Clark with four wins in the 1960s. Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda have each won the Dutch Grand Prix three times.
