Appearance and leaves

Scutellaria species rarely grow as annual or usually herbaceous plants ; some species become woody part, and grow as a half-shrubs or shrubs . The stature heights vary depending on the species from 5 centimeters to 1 meter. Some species are aquatic plants . Some species form rhizomes or, in some species, plant tubers . The plant parts are mostly odorless. The above-ground parts of the plant are mostly hairy, sometimes it is glandular hair ( indument ). The mostly independently upright to prostrate or rarely climbing, simple or branched shoot axes are often square in cross-section.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blade is usually simple or seldom pinnate and entire or toothed to notched, serrate.

Inflorescences and flowers

In terminal or lateral, racemose or spike-like inflorescences , many flowers are often in pairs in the axils of the bracts. There may be bracts and bracts , the top of which are mostly more or less sedate.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five, sometimes glandular hairy sepals are fused into a short tube. The laterally flattened, bell-shaped calyx is more or less two-lipped. The calyx lips are simple and usually entire or weakly lobed. On the upper lip of the calyx sits a rounded, concave, horn-shaped or shield-shaped appendage (spur, hump; scutellum) and it is clearly sack-shaped, cap-shaped or helmet-shaped, hence the common name of the genus "helmet herbs". The five petals have grown together to form a long tube. The corolla tube, which is bald inside and finely hairy on the outside, is more or less strongly curved to almost upright. The corolla tube widens gradually to the crown throat. The corolla ends with two lips; the upper lip being smaller than the lower lip. The upright, bilobed upper lip is more or less laterally compressed and hood-shaped. In the more or less three-lobed lower lip, the middle corolla lobe is wide, flattened and simple, the side lobes are more or less connected to the upper lip and are sometimes spread out. The colors of the petals range from white to yellow and from pink to red to blue.

Of the four parallel stamens , the front, more or less the same two, are the longer and lie below the upper lip. The ciliated or bearded at the opening anthers are paired together. With the front stamens, the dust bags consist of two counters, with the back one counter is reduced. The greenish-yellow discus is well developed below the ovary. The upper ovary is four-lobed. The stylus is sub-like and unequal in two parts at the tip.

fruit

The Klaus fruit in the constant calyx breaks down into four solitary partial fruits (Klausen). The brown or black, dry Klausen are egg-shaped, flattened ellipsoid, inverted-egg-shaped to almost spherical and their surface is very differently sculpted or structured from fine to coarse warty . There is no endosperm .

Sets of chromosomes

The chromosome numbers are 2n = 12 to 88, usually 20, 22, 24, 32 or 34.

ecology

Once the corolla after anthesis has dropped, the two cup lips fold together and form a cavity wherein a capsule, the Klausen develop sitting on the cup lip. When the fruit is ripe, the calyx divides at the seams to the base or the helmet-shaped upper lip leaves. The clauses held in the chalice by fine hair are spread out ombrochor , more precisely as rain ballists .

Such a rare, tearing and “ballistic cup” that releases the seeds is also found in Aeolanthus , another genus of the mint family .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Scutellaria was established in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , 2, p. 598. Type species is Scutellaria galericulata L. Synonyms for Scutellaria L. are: Anaspis Rech. F. , Cassida Ség. , Cruzia Phil. , Harlanlewisia Epling , Hastifolia Ehrh. , Perilomia Kunth , Salazaria Torr. , Theresa Clos .

The genus Scutellaria belongs to the subfamily of Scutellarioideae (Dumort.) Caruel within the family of Labiatae . For some authors, the monotypic genus is Salazaria Torr. not incorporated into Scutellaria . Attempts have been made to subdivide the genus, for example with one-sided and four-line inflorescences into two sub-genera, but these attempts have proven useless.

The genus Scutellaria is distributed almost worldwide. Only in the tropical, humid lowland areas are there few species. There are only a few species in tropical Africa. There are about 98 species in China .

There are 360 to 460 species in the scutellaria genus :
