Glewitz is a municipality south of Stralsund in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen , which until February 15, 2004 belonged to the then dissolved Trebeltal Office and has since been administered by the Franzburg-Richtenberg Office , based in the city of Franzburg .

Geography and traffic

Glewitz is about 14 km southwest of Grimmen and about 15 km north of Demmin . The A 20 runs north of the municipality and can be reached via the Grimmen-West junction (approx. 9 km).

The community of Glewitz is located in the Trebeltal nature reserve , an area that was formed by huge glaciers and meltwater masses that left countless lakes, moors and meltwater channels behind after the last ice age.

Glewitz Church

After the dissolution of the Principality of Rügen , the place belonged to the Duchy of Pomerania .

After the Thirty Years' War until 1815, the area belonged to Swedish Pomerania and then to the Prussian province of Pomerania .

The municipality was part of the Grimmen district until 1952 and then belonged to the Grimmen district in the Rostock district until 1994 . Glewitz has belonged to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990.

Glewitz was first mentioned in a document in 1293. In addition to the current spelling of the place name, there were the forms Glowitz and Chlewitz .
In the memorial book of the parish it was mentioned that the population at that time consisted primarily of farmers and settlers. The Glewitz church dates from the 13th / 14th centuries. Century. It was plastered in 1851. Your tower dates from around 1861.

Strelow was known as Gut und Gestüt u. a. owned by the Rassow family (1910–1945). The manor house probably dates from the middle of the 19th century.

Turow: The water castle Turow was first mentioned in a document in 1387. The castle complex dates from the 12th century. It was expanded in the 15th century on the remains of the previous castle to a moated castle with a moat and outer wall. The floor plan is U-shaped with an area of ​​200 × 175 m. The house had several stages of construction, extensions and conversions. The core of the tower has been preserved. The so-called Blue Hall has been used as a chapel since 1900 - it is a cross vault on a central column, on the walls painted canvas wallpapers from 1820 with Arcadian landscapes. The castle has a small inner courtyard, which is closed off by a gate. Landowners were u. a. the families von Künzheim (17th century) and von Ferber (1724–1915). It was then relocated, the rest yard and the castle remained in the possession of the Ferbers until 1945. After 1945 the castle became the home of the Evangelical Church. On July 1, 1950 Turow was incorporated.

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag . The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the region of Western Pomerania . It shows an upright griffin with a raised tail and the inscription "GEMEINDE GLEWITZ - LANDKREIS VORPOMMERN-RÜGEN".
