John Woodruff (born February 12, 1826 in West Hartford , Connecticut , †  May 20, 1868 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 and again from 1859 to 1861 he represented the second constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After only a limited elementary education, John Woodruff came to Catskill, New York State in 1835 . In 1841 he returned to Connecticut, where he settled in Bristol . There he worked in a watch factory until 1845 before moving to New Haven, where his political career began in 1848 as a member of the city council. In this body remained for several legislative terms.

Politically, he joined the American Party . In the congressional election of 1854, Woodruff was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second district of Connecticut . There he took over on March 4, 1855, succeeding the Democrat Colin M. Ingersoll . Since he lost to Samuel Arnold in the following elections in 1856 , he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1857 . In the elections of 1858, however, he succeeded as a candidate for the Republican Party , of which he had since become a member, to regain his old seat in Congress. This enabled him to spend another term in the US House of Representatives between March 4, 1859 and March 3, 1861, which was determined by the events leading up to the civil war .

After serving in the House of Representatives, John Woodruff became the tax director of Connecticut's Second Financial District. He held this office from 1862 until his death in 1868.
