Kœnigsmacker ( German Königsmachern , Lorraine Maacher ) is a French commune with 2244 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The community is located on the right bank of the Moselle , opposite Cattenom , about halfway between Thionville and the border triangle France-Germany-Luxembourg. The village of Métrich ( Metrich ), a little to the east, also belongs to the municipality .

history

The place was initially called Machra in the Middle Ages . From 1320 it was fortified by Johann von Luxemburg , King of Bohemia, from which the place name is derived.

Kœnigsmacker has belonged to France since 1661. After the French Revolution , the place was temporarily called Freymacker .
