history

Since 1682 the settlement Issetskaya pustosch or Schelesinskoje , located on the site of the present city, has been known, which belonged to the Dormition Monastery of Dalmatowo . In 1700, on the orders of Peter the Great , the construction of an ironworks began, which was named after the Kamensky zavod river and which started production the following year as one of the first of its kind in the region. October 15, 1701 is therefore considered to be the founding date of the city. Mainly cannons and cannon balls were produced in the factory (see city arms).

From 1825 to 1829 the factory as well as the administration and workers' settlement were reconstructed. By the end of the 19th century, the place also developed into a trading center for agricultural products.

On December 6, 1885, a railway line was opened that connected the plant and site with Bogdanowitsch on the Yekaterinburg – Tyumen line (part of the Trans-Siberian Railway since 1913 ). The station at the place was initially called Ostrowskaya , later Sinarskaya . By 1913 the line was extended to the east, via Dalmatowo to Schadrinsk . This section of the line was later included in the Yekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) - Kurgan railway line opened in 1933 . In 1940 the connection followed in the direction of Chelyabinsk .

At the same time as the expansion of the transport links, a large-scale metallurgical industry was established in the 1930s . In 1934 the Sinara pipe works went into operation, on September 5, 1939 the Ural aluminum works . The latter was in fact the only aluminum producer in the Soviet Union during the Second World War .

In the 1930s, the population of the place grew rapidly in this context. On April 20, 1935, the city charter was granted under the name Kamensk . On June 6, 1940, the city was given its current name to distinguish it from other places of the same name (e.g. Kamensk-Schachtinski ).

When the Kyshtym accident occurred in the Mayak nuclear facility in the fall of 1957 , extensions of the radioactive cloud reached the city.
