Magical Mystery Tour ( English Magically Mysterious journey ) is the soundtrack to the eponymous TV movie of the Beatles . The music for the film appeared in the UK on a double EP that was released on December 8, 1967. In the USA an LP of the same name was released on November 27, 1967 - expanded by five tracks - here it was their 15th album. In Germany, the album was only released on September 16, 1971, here it was their 19th album, including the compilation albums . The UK released the album nine years later than the US on November 19, 1976.
The album Magical Mystery Tour was released on CD for the first time in Europe on September 22, 1987 and since then has been the only original American album in the Beatles' core catalog.
Creation of the EP
The first recordings for the later soundtrack of the film took place shortly after the completion of the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band . Based on Paul McCartney's concept of a "mysterious bus tour through England", the group began work on the title track Magical Mystery Tour on April 25, 1967 at Abbey Road Studios . Work on this title continued in the following days. After further passages had been recorded in early May 1967 and the first mixes had taken place, there was a longer break before the next song on the soundtrack was tackled.
Commenting on the role of Paul McCartney at the time, John Lennon said, “Paul was starting to take on [the role of Brian Epstein ]. 'Now we're going to make a movie. Now we're going to make a record. ' And he assumed that if he didn't get us together, no one would ever make another record. He came in with about twenty good songs and said 'We're recording' and I suddenly had to write a damn bunch of songs. "
In May, the songs All Together Now and It's All Too Much were recorded, which were later used for the cartoon Yellow Submarine . In June 1967, in addition to the release of the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , the recording of the song All You Need Is Love , which the Beatles presented live via satellite to a worldwide television audience on June 25, 1967 on the BBC broadcast Our World , was also due and published on July 7, 1967. The single became the 14th number one hit in the US, the 12th number one hit in the UK and the fifth number one hit in Germany.
The first recordings for the McCartney composition Your Mother Should Know took place on August 22nd and 23rd, 1967 . Since the Abbey Road Studios were fully booked, the group moved to Chappell Recording Studios. At Pattie Harrison's suggestion, the Beatles attended a lecture by the Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on August 24, 1967 , who was promoting the techniques of Transcendental Meditation in London . The group was invited to Bangor for an introductory weekend . During the course, the Beatles received news that their manager Brian Epstein had been found dead in his apartment on August 27, 1967.
The group met on September 1, 1967 to discuss the future of the Beatles. One decision that was made was to promote the film Magical Mystery Tour .
Ringo Starr: “Brian's role in relation to us had changed. We worked in the studio, we made a record and it came out. What was there left for him to do? "
Paul McCartney: “Slowly we wanted to take the magazine into our own hands. Even before we opened our own record company Apple , we actually managed ourselves. "
On September 5th and 6th, the group focused on the Lennon composition I Am the Walrus . On September 6th, Take 1 of Blue Jay Way was recorded, George Harrison's contribution to the soundtrack. Work on this song continued the following day. On September 8th the instrumental piece Flying took shape, which at the time still had the working title Aerial Tour Instrumental . It became the first published instrumental song of the Beatles, as composers all four Beatles were given for the first time. September 11, 1967 marked the actual starting point for the film project Magical Mystery Tour , the Beatles' third film. The psychedelic comedy based on an idea by Paul McCartney was created without a script. McCartney largely took on the role of director, which caused some upset with Lennon and Harrison.
After filming, the group came to the Abbey Road recording studios on September 26 and 27, 1967 to record the McCartney composition The Fool on the Hill . With that the soundtrack was basically finished, but there were various overdubs on most of the tracks in the following period . The stereo mixes of the songs took place on November 6th and 7th, 1967, the mono mixes were made during the recording sessions.
Two other instrumental pieces were recorded while working on the soundtrack, both of which were not released on phonogram. The first track was titled Shirley's Wild Accordion and was by Lennon / McCartney . It was recorded by accordionists Shirley Evans with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. The second piece was titled Jessie's Dream . All four Beatles were named as composers. This song was used as background music in one of the dream sequences in the film.
Commenting on the recordings, George Martin commented, “While working on the Magical Mystery Tour , I realized that the freedom we had achieved with Pepper could easily reach extreme proportions and that quite a lot of recordings they didn't pull themselves together enough. They had some basic idea and then they just started jamming and the result wasn't always overwhelming. "
The single A-side Hello, Goodbye , which is not on the EP, was released on November 24, 1967, becoming the 15th number one hit in the US and the 13th number one hit in the UK and the sixth number one hit in Germany.
The double-EP soundtrack, Magical Mystery Tour , was released on December 8, 1967 and was the Beatles' thirteenth and final EP to be released in the UK during the group's existence. It was released on Parlophone both in mono (catalog number MMT-1) and - as the first Beatles EP - in stereo (SMMT-1).
The best position in the NME singles chart was second - behind the Beatles single Hello, Goodbye / I Am the Walrus . In the hit parade of Melody Maker the EP reached first place, which it held for four weeks. By January 1968, 600,000 copies of the EP had been sold in the UK.
On December 26, 1967, Magical Mystery Tour had its world premiere on BBC television, only to be panned by the press and critics shortly afterwards - as the Beatles' first failure.
Re-releases
- The EP Magical Mystery Tour was pressed into the 1970s.
- In December 1981, the EP was released as part of the The Beatles EPs Collection box set , which included all UK EPs.
- On May 26, 1992, this set was released with the slightly changed title The Beatles Compact Disc EP. Collection as CD edition.
Cover design
The photo of the folding cover was taken by John Kelly, as were the other photos in the 28-page booklet, which contains the lyrics of the songs and the illustrated story of Magical Mystery Tour by Bob Gibson. The text of the story in the companion book comes from Tony Barrow, the Beatles' press secretary , who also compiled the book. The idea of the overall design comes from Paul McCartney.

In the US , Magical Mystery Tour was released as a long-playing record . The local record company Capitol Records was not in agreement with an EP release because this format did not sell as well as Beatles singles and albums. The missing titles for an album release were found quickly. The six pieces of the film soundtrack were followed by four songs that were previously only released as a single in 1967 Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love / Baby You're a Rich Man as well as Hello, Goodbye , the A-side of the same time Magical Mystery Tour single, supplements. The album thus contains three US number one hits, these were the 13th, 14th and 15th number one hits in the USA.
The last recordings for the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band dragged on into April 1967, immediately afterwards the recordings for the EP took place between April 25 and November 2, 1967, a total of twelve songs were recorded during this time, so that too the possibility would have existed to equip the album completely with new songs. The recordings were no longer made exclusively in the Abbey Road Studios , the Beatles moved to the Olympic Studios , Chappell Studios and De Lane Lea Studios .
The concept turned out to be successful. The album reached number one on the US Billboard charts and held that position for eight weeks, making it the eleventh number one album. On December 15, 1967, the album was awarded a gold record . By Christmas 1967, 1.5 million units of the album had already been sold.
In Japan the album was released in stereo in December 1968, the record was also pressed on red vinyl.
In Germany, the US LP version of the recordings was only released on September 16, 1971 in a collaboration between Apple Records and the Hörzu record edition. The first version of the long-playing record also contains fake stereo versions of the songs Penny Lane , Baby You're A Rich Man and All You Need Is Love . George Martin mixed Penny Lane in stereo on September 30, 1971, followed by Baby You're A Rich Man on October 22, 1971 (a stereo mix of All You Need Is Love was made on October 29, 1968) on October 26, 1971 Another stereo mix was made by Strawberry Fields Forever . German follow-up presses of the album took over these four stereo versions. This version represents the world's first actual stereo release of the album and the tracks it contains; because the stereo versions of the songs Penny Lane , Baby You're A Rich Man and All You Need Is Love for the US stereo album were produced from the mono mixes using an artificial stereo process. Only the song I Am the Walrus was included in the last part (from the line: “Sitting in an English garden…”) on this German release in artificial stereo, which was due to the fact that the play König was recorded during the production of the play Lear by William Shakespeare , which has just been broadcast on the radio by the BBC, was recorded live and thus unrepeatable in the mix on a single mono master track . The real stereo mixes (with the semi-artificial I Am the Walrus ) from the German Apple / Hörzu release formed the basis for all other stereo releases on the album, including the widely used CD version from 1987 and the mastered version from 2009. I Am the Walrus was only released in full stereo on the Beatles' official mashup album Love in 2006, as the original King Lear radio version was made available by the BBC for the production of this album .
In Great Britain the album was released as an American version nine years later than in the USA, on November 19, 1976 and could not place in the UK charts. The US album Magical Mystery Tour was exported to Great Britain after its release in 1967, where it reached number 31 in the British charts in January 1968. In July 2000, the album was multi-platinum in the US for six million copies sold.
John Lennon concluded about the album: " Magical Mystery Tour is one of my favorite albums because it was so crazy."
The album was released in the USA in a mono and a stereo version. The mono version of the album contains longer versions of the songs All You Need Is Love (15 seconds) and Baby You're a Rich Man (nine seconds), the mono mixes of the British single were taken over.
In Great Britain and Germany the album was only distributed in stereo mix.
Other - unused - recorded versions of the songs I Am the Walrus , Your Mother Should Know , The Fool on the Hill and Hello, Goodbye can be found on the album Anthology 2 .
Cover design
The cover design of the US-American LP was essentially based on the British EP. The album was accompanied by a 24-page booklet, which was an enlarged version of the booklet for the British EP, but without the lyrics of the five soundtrack titles. The German record case had a significantly different cover design.
