Niederrœdern ( German Niederrödern , Alsatian Nider'reddere ) is a French commune with 931 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) near the German border near Rastatt .
history
The name of the place is probably derived from the Latin "radere", which suggests that forests were cut down there during the Roman occupation . There are still some finds from this period, such as coins and funerary urns that were found in the municipality.
In the Middle Ages , the place belonged to the Seltz monastery , which Adelheid of Burgundy , the wife of Emperor Otto I , founded in 993 after she had received the property, which was soon known as "Adelheid's own", from her husband as a gift. The first settlement was probably built around this time. The name Rotheren first appeared in 1084 in a document raising tithing . In 1255, Rüdiger von Rüdern built the first castle of the Lords of Fleckenstein in the village . In the following years the place was mentioned under the names "Rüdern" (1371), "Niederrüdern" (1442) and "Rödern" (1700).
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Niederrœdern belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Lower Alsace district .

Location description
The town's simultaneous church was built between 1760 and 1765. It houses an organ from 1754, which was installed in the church of Niederroedern in 1862. Originally it comes from the old church of Soultz-sous-Forêts .
The place also has a special Jewish tradition that extends into the 20th century. The town's first synagogue from 1785 was replaced by a new building in 1869, which fell victim to National Socialism in 1945 . There is a Jewish cemetery in Niederroedern .
economy
Traditional forestry and wood processing are still an important economic factor. Other important sources of income are grain cultivation and cattle breeding.
Personalities
Friederike Brion , one of Goethe's first lovers , was born in Niederrödern in 1752 . Her birth house from 1740 can still be visited today.
