The Kama near Perm

The Perm region ( Russian Пермский край / Permski krai ) is an administrative region ( Kraj ) in Russia . It was created on December 1, 2005 from the previous Perm Oblast and the Komi-Permjak Autonomous Okrug .

The region is located in the far east of Europe, west of the Ural Mountains, and borders the Komi Republic in the north and Udmurtia and Bashkortostan in the west and south . The most important river is the Kama , which is dammed up three times to form large reservoirs ( Kamastausee , Votkinsker Reservoir and Nizhnekamsker Reservoir ). The region is characterized by a continental climate that is reinforced by the nearby Urals.

The Trans-Siberian Railway and several federal highways run through the region. The capital Perm lies on the Kama , the largest tributary of the Volga . It is a two-hour flight from Moscow from Bolshoye Savino International Airport .

In addition to Russians, the population also includes Tatars and Komi-Permyaks .

The most important industries include the chemical industry, oil refining and wood processing.

The first detailed scientific description of the region was published in 1735 by Georg Wilhelm Henning .

Overall economy

The Perm region is one of the economically strongest areas in Russia. Above all, the extraction and processing of crude oil and potash salts , the energy industry, the iron, non-ferrous metal and chemical industries as well as mechanical engineering and the forest industry all contribute to economic output. Around two percent of Russia's oil is produced in the region, and almost all of the country's potash mining takes place here. The latter are the basic material for potash fertilizers, of which the agricultural sector in China is one of the largest customers. The major companies in the region include the engineering company ODK Permskie Motory and the defense group Motowilichinskije zavody . The largest Russian bicycle manufacturer Forward also operates a plant in Perm. In addition, several large companies with foreign participation have their headquarters in the Perm region. a. the cleaning agent manufacturer Henkel , the confectionery manufacturer Nestlé and the Russian plants of AB InBev and Knauf . The IT industry, which now employs around 18,000 people, is also becoming increasingly important. a. in high-tech startups such as the manufacturer of service robots Prombot . The telecommunications group ER-Telecom (en) , which ranks second in Russia in terms of Internet connections, also has its headquarters in the Perm region.

Perm is also an important cultural center. The opera and ballet theater is considered one of the best in Russia. In addition to the Teatr playhouse , the youth theater and the puppet theater, there is the U mosta (“At the Bridge”) theater , which has become famous in Russia for its productions of Martin McDonagh's plays . The State Perm Art Gallery has outstanding collections, including Perm wooden sculptures . The PERMM Museum of Modern Art is the first of its kind outside Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the capital there are five universities : the Perm State University , the National Polytechnic Research University of Perm , the Pedagogical University and the University of Agriculture and Technology. The Medical University of Perm should also be mentioned. There is also a branch of the National Research University High School of Economics in Perm.

The Perm region is divided into 42 Rajons and 6 urban districts (one of which is a " closed city " / SATO: Swjosdny ).

The most important cities besides the capital Perm are Berezniki and Solikamsk . There are a total of 25 cities and 27 urban-type settlements in the region .
