One Piece (ワ ン ピ ー ス Wan Pīsu) as an anime goes back to 1998, when a 30-minute OVA was produced on the occasion of the previous year's success of the manga One Piece in the Shōnen Jump and the 30th anniversary of the Jump Super Anime Tour . Production of the television series began the following year, and over 900 episodes have appeared since then. In addition, Tōei Animation has produced thirteen films, over ten television specials and some original video animations and short films. Individual companies developed numerous merchandising items, including trading card games and a large number of video games for common consoles. With sales of $ 21 billion, One Piece is one of the most successful media franchises in the world.

OVA short film

On July 28, 1998, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Weekly Shōnen Jump for the Jump Super Anime Tour, a series of OVA short films appeared, in addition to One Piece, Hunter × Hunter and Seikimatsu Leader Dan Takeshi . Readers of the Weekly Shōnen Jump had the opportunity to purchase a copy of the OVAs on VHS for ¥ 500 .

The OVA was titled One Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Ganzack (ONE PIECE 倒 せ! 海賊 ギ ャ ン ザ ッ ク, One Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Gyanzakku , in German "One Piece: Mach (t) him ready! The pirate Ganzack") produced by the Studio Production IG , which is used for films such as Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth , Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion , Jin Roh and Ghost in the Shell .

Tatsuya Hamazaki adapted the OVA in 1999 as a light novel of the same name (novel; ISBN 4-08-703084-9 ). This was published in German by Carlsen in 2010 under the title Nieder mit Ganzack! ISBN 978-3-551-75666-4 .

action

Luffy , Zorro and Nami are sailing hungry in a small nutshell across the ocean when it is sunk by a sea monster, which also kidnaps Nami. Washed up on the beach of a nearby island, Luffy is awakened in a rough way when he gets into an argument between the little Medaka and some pirates from Ganzack's troop, who are not up to him.

synchronization

The OVA has never been published in Germany, which is why there is no German-dubbed version.

Television series

1999 began the production of the television series by Toei Animation Ltd. with the aim of a film adaptation of the manga, which should go on the air on the Japanese television channel Fuji Television on October 20th of that year and has since been broadcast on a weekly basis with occasional interruptions and changes in the broadcasting time. Under the direction of the directors Kōnosuke Uda and Munehisa Sakai, almost 950 episodes plus bonus episodes have been created on the occasion of Japanese holidays . The series is so popular that it ranks 21st in the 100 most popular anime series in an online poll conducted by TV Asahi in 2006. With the broadcast of episode 207, the series has been broadcast on Japanese television since the end of October 2004 in HDTV .

The series was regularly among the ten anime series with the highest ratings in 2007. Currently, the cost of producing one episode is about 10,000,000 yen ~ about 80,000 euros.

action

The plot of the television series largely coincides with that of the original Mangas. Differences can be seen in the introduction to the story, but also at the beginning in the point of the depicted violence: The first chapters of the manga are shown as a flashback when Luffy tells his first follower Zorro about why his straw hat is so important to him . The test of whether Luffy is a pirate is limited to a joke that Luffy's role model allows himself with him. A further change in the plot concerns the so-called filler (filling episodes), which augment the actual plot with additional elements and adventures so that the television broadcast does not progress too quickly compared to the original manga.

Export of the series

In addition to the successful placement on the domestic market both through the television series itself and the its affiliated merchandising such as by video games , trading cards and action - and other collectible figures, the series has been exported to different regions and countries of the world: Different license participants acquired over time different regional exploitation rights .

So the series has so far been carried out in different parts of Europe , Asia , America and Oceania , where it has been partially adapted to different television landscapes and censorship standards. In Germany, the series started on April 22, 2003 on RTL II with 130 synchronized episodes, which sometimes cut the episodes to different degrees. The series was dubbed uncut with no falsifications, as was the case with the first 52 episodes of Dragon Ball , Dragon Ball GT or Naruto . Playbacks increased sharply from episode 263 in 2008, but decreased again from episode 315 on Tele 5.

So far, the German rights holder, the Tele München Gruppe , has acquired four more seasons after the first, making a total of 400 episodes. Initially, the broadcast was continued with the second season beginning on March 11, 2008 on RTL II. The last 86, along with other episodes, were shown for the first time in German from November 2, 2009 to September 17, 2011 on Tele 5 . In February 2011 it was announced that the German dubbing from episode 401 had been discontinued for the time being, as Tele 5 - the dubbing studio's last client - had decided to take the series out of the program.

From April 13, 2009, One Piece ran uncut with all episodes previously published in German on the pay-TV channel Animax .

VIVA bought all seven seasons from the one-piece licensor, the Tele-München-Gruppe, and broadcast them uncut from September 5, 2011 to June 26, 2012. The rights later switched to ProSiebenSat.1 Media .

ProSieben Maxx aired the eighth season for the first time from September 11 to December 19, 2014, on Thursdays and Fridays in double episodes. The station showed a preview of the eighth season with episodes 401 and 402 on April 24, 2014. The season was broadcast uncut.

In December 2015, ProSieben Maxx announced that it would show the second half of the eighth season in German for the first time from January 2016. Since January 18, 2016, the station has been showing episodes from 457 onwards, with one episode per working day (Monday to Friday). This broadcast is also uncut. After ProSieben Maxx temporarily stopped broadcasting One Piece with episode 517 in April 2016, the station has been running the anime again in its program since July 2017 and regularly broadcasts new episodes.

Since November 12, 2018, the two video-on-demand platforms Anime on Demand and Wakanim have been releasing the series, starting with episode 861, weekly in the original with German subtitles as a simulcast . Also Crunchyroll announced that they are starting to show the series with episode 923, in simulcast. In addition, all the old episodes should be available for download from Crunchyroll.

synchronization

The German version of the television series was provided with German-language dialogues up to episode 314 on behalf of RTL II and for episodes 315 to 400 on behalf of Tele 5 in the Munich dubbing studios of PPA Film GmbH. Since episode 401 the series has been edited and dubbed by Rescue Film GmbH, on behalf of Tōei Animation Europe.

Opening and closing credits

So far, 16 opening credits and a total of 18 end credits have been produced for the television series One Piece . As a special feature, the ending has been omitted since episode 284 in favor of an approximately two and a half minute opening. The German-language versions were implemented by Arts of Toyco , with one opening and all closing songs omitted. With the beginning of episode 401, only the Japanese opening songs are used in the German version, although due to the lack of licenses for the actual openings in episodes 401 to 456, Jungle P had to be used again and therefore Share the World, Kaze o Sagashite and Fight Together has so far been completely omitted.

More about publications of the series

The series appears on DVD in various countries . In Japan, the media are published at regular intervals. With episode 207, the television version was produced and broadcast in 16: 9 format. The DVDs also contain the episodes in widescreen format . A publication on Blu-ray media in high definition is still pending .

In DA-CH , the series was broadcast exclusively on television, where all episodes were broadcast in 4: 3 format , including those originally produced in 16: 9 up to and including episode 314. The episodes of the series were only edited uncensored on pay TV and broadcast on VIVA . A DVD release announced by Polyband for 2003 was canceled at short notice on the grounds that the series was too long. The information that has meanwhile been posted on the licensee's website has been removed and the adverts that have been placed have not been broadcast.

In the USA, the series was initially licensed by 4kids Entertainment, which changed the series from time to time to make it more compatible for the American television market. All elements considered harmful or racist, such as cigarettes (this is how Sanji sucks lollipops instead of smoking) or blackface were replaced by other objects or retouched accordingly. Furthermore, complete parts of the plot were simply left out, making it no longer comprehensible. In the meantime, the series license in the USA has been taken over by Funimation, which they re-dub and release uncut on DVD.

cinemamovies

Since 2000, a one-piece film has been released in Japanese cinemas every year. As can be seen in other movies on various Shōnen manga, the well-known characters play along and live through a story that is closed from the actual plot. In 2007 a story that had already been portrayed in manga and television series was summarized in a cinema adventure for the first time. This movie is based on the adventures in Alabasta. Another film, released in March 2008, is based on the events in Drumm, whereby the plot is not only greatly shortened, but sometimes presented differently.

For the tenth film, the character design and storyline were created by Oda. It became known after the tenth film that a new one-piece film would only be released every two years thereafter. The cinema-Special One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase , who does not belong to the film canon, was executed in contrast to the other films as a 3D animation film and ran as Jump Heroes movie called double feature together with Toriko 3D: Kaimaku Gourmet Adventure !! .

The films have been shown in German and Austrian cinemas since One Piece Gold . On free TV, the first 10 films were shown for the first time in German from August 18, 2012 on the VIVA channel, always on Saturdays during prime time . The eleventh film premiered on September 6, 2014 on ProSieben .

The German anime DVD label Kazé released the first ten films on DVD between February 2011 and September 2012. Starting with Film 5, Kazé is also releasing the films on Blu-ray alongside the DVD version. There will be no re-release of the first four films on Blu-ray. In November 2013, Kazé continued with the release of the eleventh film.
