Overtime (ice hockey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Overtime ( German  Game Extension ) refers to the season in Hockey , but also other sports after the actual playing time has already passed. If a game is not decided after the actual playing time, there is usually a so-called overtime. Overtime during a regular season is not used in all leagues, however. Almost every association and league has its own rules regarding overtime.

variants

Overtimes come in a wide variety of lengths and variations, and it also varies whether three, four or five field players per team are allowed to be on the ice.

Variants:

  • limited, ending in a draw after expiry (applied in the NHL regular season through the 2003/04 season )
  • limited, with subsequent penalty shootout (used in the regular season of the NHL since the 2005/06 season )
  • continuous, divided into periods of 20 minutes each (used in the NHL playoffs )

Furthermore, each of these variants can either be played in Sudden Death mode or the result can be settled at the end of the specified extra time .

Overtimes in various leagues and associations

In international ice hockey federation matches, there is no overtime during the group stage, but ten minutes of overtime and then penalty shootout in the playoffs.

In the National Hockey League a sudden death overtime variant of a maximum of five minutes was introduced again for the 1983/84 season after the regular season overtime had been abolished in 1942 for economic reasons and, above all, for reasons of travel technology. First, an overtime loss was rated as a full-time loss. Since the 1998/99 season , a team that has suffered a defeat after overtime has received one point. Since the same season, overtime is no longer played as usual with 5-on-5, but with 4-on-4 field players. The aim of both changes was to make the overtime more offensive and at the same time reduce the number of draws.

Since the 2005/06 season there has been a shootout after five minutes of overtime in a tie , the so-called shootout, in which three players per team compete. There are two points for a win in the regular season in the NHL, regardless of whether it was scored in regular time, overtime or the shootout. A team that is defeated in overtime or shootout receives one point and a team that loses in regular time does not. There is a continuous 5-on-5 sudden death overtime in the NHL playoffs. After 20 minutes there is a break, the ice is freshly prepared and the teams switch sides after the break. The highest number of overtime thirds ever achieved in the NHL playoffs is six. This happened on March 24, 1936, in a game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons , which the Red Wings won 1-0.

In the Finnish SM-liiga , a sudden death overtime of five minutes with a subsequent penalty shoot-out is played during the main season. In the playoffs there are 20-minute sudden death overtime thirds.

In the regular season of the Austrian league there is a five-minute 3-on-3 sudden death overtime followed by a penalty shootout. A continuous 20-minute 5-on-5 sudden death overtime is played in the playoffs.

In the German Ice Hockey League , a five-minute 3-on-3 sudden death overtime (up to 2015 4-on-4) followed by a penalty shoot-out is played in the regular season. The winner after regular playing time receives three, the winner after overtime or penalty shootout two, the loser after overtime one and the loser after regular time no points. In the playoffs there was only one extra third of 20 minutes at most until the end of the 2006/07 season . If no goal was scored by the end of the extra time, a penalty shoot-out followed as in the main round to determine the winner. For the 2007/08 season , the league leadership, following the example of the NHL, introduced a continuous extension of time in sections of 20 minutes each until one team scored the decisive goal. The innovation meant that the record for the longest DEL game between March 16 and 22, 2008, which had existed since 1995, was improved three times. The longest overtime game so far in German ice hockey history was the third playoff quarter-final between the Kölner Haien and Adler Mannheim on March 22, 2008. Cologne's Philip Gogulla scored the 5-4 winning goal in the sixth extra time after a total of 168: 16 minutes. At the same time, a new record was set as the longest game in European ice hockey.
