Revolver is the seventh studio album by the British group The Beatles , released in Great Britain on August 5, 1966. In Germany, the album was released on July 28, 1966, here it was their eleventh album, including the compilation albums .

In the USA a version with only eleven instead of fourteen songs was released on August 5, 1966, here it was their 13th album. The UK version of Revolver was released on CD in the US on July 21, 1987 .

Emergence

The development that began with Rubber Soul continued with the work on Revolver . The Beatles spent more and more time perfecting their sound in the studio and trying out sonic possibilities. Among other things, they experimented with reverse tapes, as can be heard in the songs I'm Only Sleeping and Tomorrow Never Knows . At the request of the Beatles, Ken Townshend, a sound engineer at Abbey Road Studios , developed a recording process that uses an artificial double track to create a slightly delayed or advanced image of a recording track ( automatic double-tracking , or ADT for short ) . This process was used intensively for the first time on Revolver , and Geoff Emerick continued to try to make the bass and drum sounds more dominant.

George Martin said: “More and more, their own ideas came to fruition in the studio. They started telling me what they wanted and pushed me for more ideas and ways to turn those ideas into reality. From Revolver you can tell that the guys were listening to a lot of American records and thinking: 'Can we have this or that effect too?' "

Paul McCartney said of the musical changes: “I heard Stockhausen , a piece consisted of a lot of plink-plonks and interesting ideas. Maybe our audience wouldn't mind a few small changes, we thought, and if they did, bad luck! We always just followed our own nose - almost always anyway. "

While John Lennon called Rubber Soul a "pot album" ( pot = cannabis ), he called Revolver the "acid album" ( acid = colloquially the drug LSD ) because the Beatles had come into contact with LSD in the meantime. The effects of drug experiences were evident in the psychedelic pieces that the Beatles recorded for Revolver, which also pioneered a new musical trend: psychedelic rock .

It was mainly John Lennon and George Harrison who composed psychedelic songs early on. Harrison had meanwhile dealt more intensively with Indian music , which was reflected in his song Love You To . The sitar used on the song later became a trademark of psychedelic music. While the instrument was only used sparingly on Norwegian Wood , it was the main instrument on Love You To .

Noteworthy was Tomorrow Never Knows with feedback and tapes played backwards. John Lennon was inspired by Timothy Leary's instructions: “Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream”. Lennon's distorted voice gave the piece dreamlike features, accompanied by a hypnotic drum beat. The songs I'm Only Sleeping and She Said She Said were also influenced by psychedelics.

Another track was Yellow Submarine with Ringo Starr's lead vocal. The music was by no means psychedelic, but the text of the piece, written by Paul McCartney, gave room for interpretation beyond the seemingly banal content. McCartney always denied drug references, however, for him it was just a nursery rhyme. In 1968, the cartoon of the same name, which was released in theaters in July, conveyed a different message: The yellow submarine Yellow Submarine was portrayed as the perfect psychedelic vehicle.

For the first time George Harrison contributed three songs to a Beatles album.

The recordings for the LP began on April 6, 1966, a total of 16 songs were recorded during the sessions, 14 of which were used for the album. Two other recorded songs did not come on the album, but were released in advance as single on June 10, 1966: Paperback Writer by Paul McCartney and Rain by John Lennon. The single became the tenth number one hit in the UK, twelfth in the US and second in Germany. For the first time, professional music videos were shot for advertising purposes for the single. The aim was to send them to the television stations so that they no longer have to appear everywhere. The shooting of Paperback Writer and Rain took place on May 19 and 20, 1966 under the direction of Michael Lindsay-Hogg .

George Harrison: “The Beatlemania made it very difficult to get around. And because it was more convenient, we didn't go to the TV studios as often to promote our records. We preferred to make our own little films and put them on TV. I think the first more professional ones were Paperback Writer and Rain at Chiswick House . They were the forerunners of the videos. "

The last recordings were made on June 21, 1966, the mono mixes took place on June 20, 21 and 22, and the stereo mixes on June 21 and 22, 1966. Various studio musicians were used during the recordings. The very complex recordings meant that the music at live concerts became more difficult to reproduce, so that on the last tour in the USA in August 1966 the Beatles did not play a song from the album, but the single Paperback Writer did .

The album Revolver entered the UK charts at number one on August 10, 1966, where it remained for seven weeks. It was the Beatles' seventh number one album in the UK. In Germany it was the sixth album by the Beatles, which reached number one on the charts. There were over 300,000 pre-orders for the album in the UK. The double A-side single Eleanor Rigby / Yellow Submarine was released like the album on August 5, 1966 and also reached number one in the British charts, becoming the eleventh number one hit in Great Britain and the third in Germany. It was the only Beatles single in Great Britain that Ringo Starr contributed the lead vocals.

As a play on words, the title Revolver does not refer to a weapon, but to the rotation of the turntable. Originally the album was supposed to be called Abracadabra , but it was found that this title had already been used. Other alternative names were Magic Circles and Beatles on Safari .

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version. In Germany the album was only distributed in stereo mix.

The mono version is also characterized by the different mixes of the songs Taxman (the cowbell starts earlier in the mono version ), I'm Only Sleeping (the backward guitar runs sound different), Got to Get You into My Life (the mono version is eight seconds longer and the closing vocals by Paul McCartney are different from the stereo version), Tomorrow Never Knows (the first pressing of the British mono version contains a different mix) Love You To (longer end of the song), Yellow Submarine (different mix of the sound effects and the background vocals and the guitar), Here, There and Everywhere (different mix of the background vocals), I Want to Tell You (the piano has been mixed more in the foreground), Eleanor Rigby and For No One (the vocals have more dominance on both songs) .

The CD maxi single (formerly EP ) Real Love contains other versions of the songs Yellow Submarine and Here, There and Everywhere .

George Martin released his album George Martin Instrumentally Salutes the Beatle Girls in November 1966 , on which he played the songs Eleanor Rigby , She Said She Said , I'm Only Sleeping , Got to Get You Into My Life , Yellow Submarine , Here, There and Everywhere , And Your Bird Can Sing and Good Day Sunshine reinterpreted.

The US music magazine Rolling Stone leads revolver in the list of " 500 Greatest Albums of All Time " in third place.

Explanations of the songs

1. Taxman (Harrison)

   In this piece, George Harrison deals with the English taxation policy, so the then British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the later Prime Minister Edward Heath are dubbed as tax collectors (“Ha ha, Mr. Wilson, ha ha, Mr. Heath…”). The guitar solo was played by Paul McCartney.

2. Eleanor Rigby ( Lennon / McCartney )

   When recording Eleanor Rigby , none of the Beatles played an instrument. Her producer George Martin wrote an arrangement for a string octet for this song, with Paul McCartney singing.

3. I'm Only Sleeping (Lennon / McCartney)

   According to George Harrison, this is the first piece in which the Beatles used instruments played backwards, here in the guitar solo. First the solo was composed as it should sound, then played back from behind in order to be able to incorporate it backwards into the piece. The piece was written and sung by John Lennon.

4. Love You To (Harrison)

   The Indian tabla player Anil Bhagwat was brought into the studio especially for this piece . Harrison played the sitar solo at the beginning of the piece. The working title of the song was Granny Smith .

5. Here, There and Everywhere (Lennon / McCartney)

   This love song, composed by McCartney, originated at John Lennon's pool. McCartney tried to start the stanzas with the words "here", "there" and "everywhere". The intro (“To lead a better life…”) anticipates the harmonic changes of the song. The piece is one of McCartney's favorite pieces. Lennon also named it as one of his favorites in his interview with Playboy magazine .

6. Yellow Submarine (Lennon / McCartney)

   This song, like most of his vocal numbers, was written specifically for Ringo Starr . It's a McCartney composition. The story for the film Yellow Submarine was later invented around the imaginary yellow submarine . In addition to the Beatles, many other people in the studio sing along in the chorus , including George Martin.

7. She Said She Said (Lennon / McCartney)

   In this song Lennon deals with an LSD experience. He was inspired to the text of the piece by a conversation with Peter Fonda , who - under the influence of LSD - said “I know what it's like to be dead…”, said Lennon in his interview with the music magazine Rolling Stone in 1970.    The most striking feature of this piece, composed by Lennon, are the two-part guitar runs, recorded by Harrison and McCartney. John Lennon described his composition in the Playboy interview in 1980 as a "waste product".

10. For No One (Lennon / McCartney)

    The more intensive work on her music and the search for new arrangements and usable instruments led to the fact that the horn player Alan Civil was hired for this McCartney composition to record the short horn solo. Otherwise only two of the Beatles took part: Paul McCartney with his vocals, keyboard and bass and Ringo Starr as percussionist .

11. Doctor Robert (Lennon / McCartney)

    This Doctor Robert really existed. Dr. Robert Freymann practiced in New York . The song is about a doctor who supplies prominent people with drugs whenever they ask him about it.

12. I Want to Tell You (Harrison)

    George Harrison's third piece on revolver . Like many of Harrison's songs, I Want to Tell You did not have a title for a long time and was thus recorded under the working title of Laxton's Superb (a variety of apple).

13. Got to Get You into My Life (Lennon / McCartney)

    For this piece McCartney had the sound of the Motown records from the USA in mind, so a brass group was used here. As with several of McCartney's other compositions, the chords were played staccato on the beats. Cover design

The design of the cover comes from Klaus Voormann , a friend of the Beatles from their days in Hamburg , and is designed as a mixture of collage and line drawing . The back cover photo is from Robert Whitaker and shows the Beatles in the recording studio.

Paul McCartney said of the cover: “Klaus had been a good friend since the time in Hamburg - he was one of the 'Exis', the existentialists that we met at the time. We knew he was drawing and doing graphic design , admittedly we didn't know what exactly he was doing, but he had been to college. We knew it had to be good, so we said, 'Why don't you come up with something for the LP cover?' He did it, and we were all very pleased with it. "

• On April 30, 1987 the album Revolver was first released as a CD in Europe (USA: July 21, 1987), exclusively in a stereo mix. The mastering was next George Martin from the sound engineer of the Abbey Road Studios monitored Mike Jarrett. The CD is accompanied by an eight-page illustrated booklet.
• On September 9, 2009 the album was released remastered in a stereo mix on CD and as part of The Beatles Stereo Box Set . Emergence

The album Revolver was the thirteenth album by the Beatles in the US and their tenth of Capitol Records released studio album ( Introducing ... The Beatles was of Vee-Jay Records and A Hard Day's Night was developed by United Artists released The Beatles' Story is a documentation Album) and reached number one on the US Billboard 200 , where it stayed for six weeks, making it the ninth number one album there. In July 2000, the album was multi-platinum in the US for five million copies sold.

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version. The British mono and stereo versions were adopted for the album.

The US version of the album was also released in mono and stereo in Canada on August 8, 1966, and in Mexico in the fall of 1966 .

Republication

In January 2014, the US version of Revolver was released as part of the CD box The US Albums , it was also released separately and contains the mono and stereo versions of the album.
