Samuel Lawrence (politician, 1773)

Samuel Lawrence (born May 23, 1773 in Newtown , Province of New York , † October 20, 1837 in Cayutaville , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman William T. Lawrence was his brother.

Career

Samuel Lawrence was born in Queens County about two years before the Revolutionary War broke out . He attended community schools. Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1794, he began practicing in New York City . He was a clerk to the Attorney General of New York. He was then appointed a judge at the Marine Court of New York City (later City Court ). He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1808 . On February 19, 1811, he became a county clerk in New York County - a position he held until February 21, 1812. Lawrence moved in 1814 to the Cayuta Lake in the Township of Cayuga in Chemung County (then Schuyler County ). He was a member of the New York State Assembly again in 1817, 1818, 1820, and 1821.

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Adams-Clay faction. In the congressional elections of 1822 for the 18th Congress , Lawrence was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 25th  constituency of New York , where he became the first representative of the 25th district of New York in the US on March 4, 1823 -House of Representatives began his service. Lawrence died on October 20, 1837 on Cayuta Lake near Cayutaville and was buried there in the family cemetery.
