Shelby County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Sidney .
geography
The county is located in western Ohio, about 45 km from the Indiana border, and covers an area of 1,065 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Auglaize County , Logan County , Champaign County , Miami County, and Darke County .
history
Shelby County was formed on January 7, 1819 from parts of Miami County. It was named after Isaac Shelby , a general in the American Revolutionary War and later the fifth governor of Kentucky .
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the People's Federal Savings and Loan Association . 18 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Shelby County's population was 47,910. 665 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,636 households and 13,085 families. The population density was 45 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.04 percent white, 1.49 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.97 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.05 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80 percent of the population.
Of the 17,636 households, 36.9 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers, 25.8 percent were non-families, 22.0 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.13.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,507 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,331. Males had a median income of $ 36,212 versus $ 24,470 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,255. 5.3 percent of families and 6.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. This included 8.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 5.3 percent of people aged 65 and over.
