Winnebago County is located in the far north of Illinois on the border with Wisconsin . It has an area of 1345 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. Winnebago County was formed from Jo Daviess County on January 16, 1836. It was named after the Winnebago people
The first post office was opened in 1837. In 1838 the first stagecoach arrived from Chicago , the first theatrical performance was at Rockford House, and the first Baptist religious association was formed. In 1839, East and West Rockford, divided by the Rock River, were merged and had 235 residents. In 1840 the Rock River Express , the first newspaper, was published. The first iron ore deposit was discovered in 1846
In 1852 the first train of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad arrived and brought the first Swedish settlers. In 1855, District Attorney Abraham Lincoln visited Rockford, and in 1856 the first two public schools were established. In 1859 the railway line between Rockford and Kenosha in Wisconsin was completed. In 1877 the cathedral of the courthouse collapsed and buried several people under it. A year later the new courthouse was completed. The first opera house opened in 1881, the first hospital opened in 1882 and the first high school opened in 1885 .

According to the 2010 census , Winnebago County had 295,266 people in 113,015 households. The population density was 221.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.57 people lived in each of the 113,015 households.
The racial the population was composed of 82.1 percent white, 12.5 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 2.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.2 percent of the population.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older. 51.2 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 47,597 USD . The per capita income was $ 24,544. 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
