The 1983/84 season of the Alpine Ski World Cup organized by the FIS began on December 1, 1983 in Kranjska Gora and ended on March 25, 1984 in Oslo . 32 races were held for the men (10  downhill runs , 4  Super-G , 8  giant slaloms , 10  slaloms ). For women there were 28 races (8 downhill runs, 2 Super-G, 7 giant slaloms, 11 slaloms). In addition, there were five combined scores for men and six for women. There was also a parallel slalom, which only counted for the Nations Cup . There was no discipline evaluation for the Super-G, the results were included in those for the giant slalom. In the men's discipline ranking for the giant slalom, Ingemar Stenmark and Pirmin Zurbriggen both got 115 points, but the higher number of victories was decisive for the Swede to be the sole winner.

The highlight of the season was the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo .

Season course

Premier victories

  • On December 12, 1983, Max Julen achieved his first and only victory in a World Cup race in Les Diablerets , but about 2 months later an even more important one followed at Bjelašnica .
  • Only two victories of the season with the premiere on December 18 in Val Gardena , these were his first and he then did not win a race, was enough for Urs Räber to also be successful in the World Cup.
  • First victories for the men of the US Ski Association in a descent and thus for Bill Johnson : It began on January 15 in Wengen , where he surprised with No. 21 and defeated Erwin Resch, who was leading at the time - and Johnson also wore both In other races he won the World Cup runs outside of the elite, namely 19 in Aspen and 18 in Whistler (only when he won the Olympic Games, thanks to the limited number of starters there, he was allowed to drive with a lower number, namely 6).
  • Robert Zoller achieved his only success on March 6th in the slalom of Vail as an “outsider” (start number 20), where he was allowed to start and was the first to start fifth after the first run due to the “super bibbo rule” benefited from the fact that the two leading runners, Križaj and Fjällberg, fell.
  • Marina Kiehl , who had already surprised at the Olympic Games, was the only woman who achieved a maiden victory: It was on March 4th in Mont Sainte-Anne when she with start no. 35 clearly prevailed with a difference of 0.92 s.

Injuries and comebacks

Men's:

  • There was an accident during the Canadians' training in Sölden, where the runner Chris McIver collided with the fitness trainer Peter Kopp at a confusing spot and seriously injured him; Kopp was brought to the Innsbruck University Clinic by helicopter.
  • The Carinthian runner Bernhard Flaschberger (born February 27, 1960) had a serious fall on January 31 during downhill training in Cortina d'Ampezzo during a jump and suffered a ruptured inner ligament and cruciate ligament in his right knee; he was discovered on February 1st in Innsbruck by senior physician Dr. Jörg Oberhammer does an atroscope and operates.
  • Helmut Höflehner returned to the World Cup on January 7th on the downhill in Laax, where he finished 14th. He was out after an injury on October 28th (strained inner ligament in the knee during training in Hintertux).

Women:

  • Even before the downhill race in Haus im Ennstal there was a bad incident in the morning at the second time run when the 17-year-old Hungarian runner Csilla Apjok crossed the finish line in a daze after falling on the track at the "Dirtler-Edge" and crashed into a wooden wall there. She suffered a skull and open fracture of her left arm and was taken to the clinic in the city of Salzburg, where her life was in danger and had neurosurgery. On January 11th, the runner was transferred to a rehabilitation center in Budapest ; she was out of danger, woke up from her coma a week ago and had been responsive for a few days. The healing process was according to Dr. Hans Diemuth from the Salzburg clinic is satisfactory.
  • Veronika Vitzthum suffered an inner ligament tear in her left knee in a fall on the descent in Bad Gastein on January 13th.
  • Irene Epple had her long-standing injury in her right knee in South Lake Tahoe through the US team's doctor, Dr. Rick Stattmann, operate. In theory, she could still have intervened in the hunt for the overall World Cup.

Cancellations / postponements

Men's:

  • The Super-G scheduled for December 21st in Madonna di Campiglio was already ridden on December 19th, and also in Val Gardena.
  • The onset of warm weather had already occurred after Christmas for 7./8. January in Morzine planned competitions (downhill and slalom) endangered and ultimately led to the relocation of the downhill to Laax , the slalom was initially planned for Wengen. But the organizers of the Lauberhorn races even had to cancel their own slalom (the entire concentration had been on the execution of the downhill run), so that it was driven on January 17th in Parpan , where the Morzine one took place on January 16th. The Lauberhorn combination was rated with this second Parpan slalom. The departure also took place one day late, on January 15th - and a new starting number draw was necessary.
  • The descent planned for March 3rd in Aspen had to be postponed by one day due to heavy snowfall, which means that the giant slalom was not held on March 4th, but only on March 5th.

Women:

  • Since Sestriere could not hold the descent planned for December 13th due to insufficient snow conditions, it was already driven in Val-d'Isère on December 8th, which means there were two descents in a row - and the giant slalom was only held on December 11th.
  • As with the men in Morzine, the women's competitions in Pfronten were already in danger at the end of December and were taken over by Puy-Saint-Vincent .
  • The descent in Megève already took place on January 27, but had to be canceled due to fog after Elisabeth Kirchler (start number 13; she was fourth behind Irene Epple, Ehrat and Graham) and postponed to the next day, which means that the Giant slalom in St. Gervais had to be postponed by one day.

Other occurrences

  • Approx. 100 million schillings (approx. DM 12.5 million or CHF 11 million) in grants from the ski companies and the winter sports industry were to be given to the around 200 alpine and Nordic ski racers and the ski jumpers of the Austrian Ski Association in the 1983/84 season made available.
  • Doris De Agostini had ended her career, but after her marriage she was still available to her ski company "Kästle" (and also for toothpaste) for advertising in Switzerland and Italy. She had also moved to Minusio to her future husband Luca Rosetti (Ambri-Piotta's ice hockey player).
  • The races scheduled for the beginning of the season in France were in jeopardy due to the organizers' financial difficulties before the President of the Fédération Française de Ski , Georges Coquillard, gave the "Okay" ("Oui oui") on November 10th. The reason was that the TV (once again) did not want to broadcast, which would have resulted in the loss of sponsorship funds. Only a grant from the French government of 1.5 million francs made the event possible.
  • The “Skier of the Year 1982/83” award announced by the international association of ski sport journalists in Geneva went to Phil Mahre, who won with 25 votes ahead of Franz Klammer (16) and Tamara McKinney. After three female winners (Hanni Wenzel, Marie-Theres Nadig and Erika Hess), Mahre was given a man again, and for the second time after Nancy Greene in 1968, an overseas athlete received the trophy that was to be presented to him in Val-d'Isère.
  • The season started in Kranjska Gora without the Epple sisters: Maria had too much training deficit after a kidney disease, Irene did without after finishing 22nd in the slalom in the “World Series” and wanted to concentrate on her special disciplines giant slalom and downhill.
  • It was questionable to what extent the calendar of 62 races in 75 days would damage the all-rounders. Phil Mahre already felt at a disadvantage at the start of the season when he was the only slalom skier to drive from Kranjska Gora to Schladming, where due to new guidelines he was only allowed to complete one time period the day before the race and finished 19th with no points.
  • Les Diablerets , the hometown of the overall World Cup winner of 1976/77, Lise-Marie Morerod , hosted a men's World Cup race for the first time on December 12th with the giant slalom.
  • Compared to previous years, the visit to the men's downhill run in Schladming (December 4th) with 11,000 people was far below the organizers 'expectations, which meant that (despite the Austrians' double victory) there was no great mood - and no one could explain this decline (perhaps had many gone skiing themselves on this beautiful day of skiing?).
  • At the men's slalom in Courmayeur , only 24 of the 82 starters made it into the ranking.
  • The men's speed races in Val Gardena were the first in Europe to be held on an artificial snow slope. However, the start had to be moved 200 m downwards.
  • The broadcast offers of the German-speaking TV stations on the weekend of 17/18 were somewhat “mixed”. December: while the SRG showed both the men's downhill run in Val Gardena on December 17 and the women's slalom in Piancavallo on December 18, the ORF was only there in Val Gardena - in Germany only BR , u. between the slalom. However, due to the heavy fog, there were only shadowy figures to be seen on the screen - Anni Kronbichler, who came in 15th place (3.20 s behind), was particularly badly affected, because before her start there had been a longer break due to the extreme worsening of the weather.
  • The relocation of the men's Super-G from Madonna di Campiglio to Val Gardena almost resulted in Andreas Wenzel being refused the start. Ultimately, his late registration was accepted, but he was given the start number. 120 “prescribed”, although only 104 runners were at the start, but in the end he was allowed to start the race in sixteenth.
  • Hanni Wenzel's 29th World Cup victory was also her first downhill victory - she won on December 21 in Haus im Ennstal .
  • While Franz Klammer only finished 13th in his 100th World Cup downhill run on the Lauberhorn, not only did Bill Johnson achieve his first victory with No. 21 (he also set the fastest time in the final training in fresh snow), but many others came Runners with high starting numbers in the World Cup ranks , especially Anton Steiner with No. 59 in 2nd place, but also Garry Athans with No. 44 in 5th place, etc. - Klammer himself spoke of Johnson that he was a «nose picker».
  • In his 101st descent, also in Kitzbühel, which is often referred to as the “Mecca of Alpine skiing”, Franz Klammer achieved his 25th and last victory in a World Cup descent.
  • In the first Parpan slalom, the Mahre twins, who had mixed up their start numbers (Phil drove with Steve's 13 and he, who would actually have won the race by 0.29 seconds, with Phil's 3) were disqualified; they themselves had admitted their lapse in front of the jury (although the Liechtenstein Association had already rushed ahead with an objection) and were allowed to complete the second run in protest of the other teams. At the award ceremony, however, Girardelli climbed onto the podium intended for second place out of solidarity, while Wenzel, as third, stayed away from the ceremony. It was also curious that Ingemar Stenmark did not make it into the classification again in Parpan (fall) and Steve Mahre of all places had won at this place last year (January 4, 1983) (disqualification of Stenmark).
  • At the slalom in Vail (March 6th) it took the jury a long time to announce the final result; especially with regard to the simultaneous third place ( Lars-Göran Halvarsson and Phil Mahre ) a bit “impaled”. Incidentally, Franz Gruber did not participate in the second run because of back pain. (Please refer to the source under "Premier victories" in the remarks on Robert Zoller.)
  • None of the German-language TV stations broadcast the final races in Oslo directly ("FS 1" of the ORF showed the men's freestyle from the figure skating world championship in Ottawa at 9:30 a.m. on March 24 and on March 25 on "FS 2" from 14 h under the title “Sports Afternoon”, the dance couple's freestyle and also a contribution about the Vienna Marathon, also the ORF radio, known for direct broadcasts, limited itself to its standard programs like “Sport and Music” on March 24th at 4:30 p.m. Ö3 “- there were also no TV broadcasts in Switzerland or the Federal Republic of Germany).
  • A report at the end of March came from the founding of an organization “International Association of Downhill Racers” (“IADR”), which was supported by eight ski stars (Franz Klammer, Leonhard Stock, Urs Räber, Conradin Cathomen, Erwin Resch, Todd Brooker and Bill Johnson; the latter was represented by his father because he took part in a show in Las Vegas ) and Harti Weirather in Malbun . The purpose should be to make downhill racing more interesting and to attract the public more effectively - in addition, participation in important decisions (selection of the venues, routing, cooperation with the media and TV stations - here also discussion of camera work). It was known that behind these plans there were potent sponsors ( Walter Wolf , also ex-Bayern manager Robert Schwan , who had stakes in TV stations).

Resignations

Women: Christin Cooper , Nadeschda Patrakejewa , Fabienne Serrat , Lea Sölkner , Gerry Sorensen , Hanni Wenzel , Petra Wenzel

Men: In addition to the twin brothers Phil and Steve Mahre (they had surprisingly traveled home to the USA in December and only started again in Adelboden, who had announced their retirement during the Olympic Games on February 12th, and said goodbye on March 7th in Vail and renounced the trip to the Scandinavian races), it was Toni Bürgler , Steve Podborski , Stig Strand and Valeri Zyganow . (Sorensen and Podborski retired in Mont Sainte-Anne and Whistler, respectively.)

News of death

The news that the former downhill world champion and five-time winner of a World Cup downhill, Josef Walcher , died in a charity race on the Hochwurzen near his hometown Schladming , burst into the celebration of the triple victory of the ÖSV men on the Kitzbühel downhill 22nd of January.

Race outside the World Cup

Before the start of the season there were the well-known “World Series” events in November, this time (with numerous changes to the schedule) in Bormio . The US runners and Ingemar Stenmark were absent, however, although the Swede did not compete in the World Cup slalom in Kranjska Gora , where he was eliminated, after he had initially announced that he would not contest his first race in Courmayeur until December 13th (and if one bad season at all) to want to end his career.

It all started with a women's giant slalom on November 23, with a victory for Fabienne Serrat ahead of Fernandez-Ochoa, Erika Hess and Irene Epple (7th place: Claudia Riedl from ÖSV ). The next two days there were giant slaloms for the men: First Joël Gaspoz won ahead of Julen and Zurbriggen, then Zurbriggen ahead of Julen and Martin Hangl (with the ranks 4 and 10 for Guido Hinterseer as the best of the ÖSV ). The conclusion was formed on November 26th and 27th with a women's and men's slalom, whereby Roswitha Steiner was successful ahead of Hanni Wenzel and Erika Hess and Klaus Heidegger ahead of Bojan Križaj and Marc Girardelli.
