geography

Béon is located at 260  m , about twelve kilometers north-northeast of the city of Belley and 56 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southeast of Bugey , on a cone of rubble at the southern foot of the Grand Colombier west of the Rhone Valley , on the edge of the extensive moorland Marais de Lavours .

The area of the municipality of 10.30 km² covers a section of the Rhône valley. The southern part of the municipality is occupied by the still intact swamp area of the Marais de Lavours ( 230  m ). In the extreme south, the municipality reaches as far as the winding course of the Séran , a right tributary of the Rhône. To the north, the community area extends over the steep slope, which is partly criss-crossed by rock bands, to the Jura ridge of the Grand Colombier. On its southernmost summit, the Pointe de Fautriolet , the highest point of Béon is reached at 1443  m . The steep southern slope is subdivided by various erosion channels. Debris cones were accumulated at the foot of the slope.

The former mansion of Luyrieu is now part of Béon. The neighboring communities are Arvière-en-Valromey with Chavornay in the north, Culoz in the east, Ceyzérieu in the south and Talissieu in the west.

history

The municipality of Béon was already populated during Roman times. Wall foundations of various Roman villas were discovered.

Since the 11th century, Béon formed a rule under the lords of Lhuirieu / Luyrieu, who were under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy. In the 13th century the village was raised to a parish. With the Treaty of Lyon , Béon came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The parish church of Béon dates back to the 14th century and was last extensively restored in 1968. The ruins of the medieval Luyrieu castle rise on a rocky ridge above the village. At the foot of this crest is the Château de Béon, built in the 19th century.
