history
From the 1st century to the middle of the 3rd century there was a Roman settlement ( vicus ) at this point .
The place is first mentioned by name in a document dated September 17, 1229. In 1284 Gleisdorf received market rights. In 1532 the place was besieged by the Turkish army and largely destroyed. The fortifications, the ( Tabor ) around the St. Laurentius Church, held up, however.
Until 1570 Gleisdorf belonged to the rule Riegersburg , then it went to the Counts Kollonitsch, who owned Freiberg Castle north of the city . The parish church was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1648–1672, incorporating Gothic parts ; today's neo-Gothic tower dates from 1875. In the revolutionary year of 1848, Gleisdorf equipped an important department of the National Guard .
With the construction of the railway in 1872, an economic boom began for the Gleisdorf market, which reached its peak with the construction of a hydroelectric power station in the Stubenbergklamm . The town hall was also built during this time.
On June 8, 1920, Gleisdorf was elevated to the status of town (LGBl. 1920, No. 156). Gleisdorf was the first municipality in the First Republic to be ranked as a city. In the 1970s, the connection to the south autobahn brought a renewed upswing, as more industrial companies settled there.
The Styrian State Exhibition 2001 in Gleisdorf was dedicated to the topic of energy . A reference to the long-term work of the “AEE INTEC” (“ Working Group Renewable Energy - Institute for Sustainable Technologies”), which began in the city as a “self-assembly group of solar systems”, and finally as “Arge Renewable Energy” (1988 was founded by former Assembly leaders working group Renewable Energy founded a non-profit association.) Became active. Gleisdorf is part of the LEADER region “Energieregion Weiz-Gleisdorf”.
On January 1, 2015, the neighboring communities of Labuch, Laßnitzthal, Nitscha and Ungerdorf were merged with the city of Gleisdorf as part of the Styrian community structural reform. This increased the area from 4.75 km² to 38.66 km² and the population rose from 6,122 to 10,274.

Historic extensions are from 1891-1893. On the outer facade there is a Roman stone from the 2nd century
- On the main square, in front of the parish church, there is a Marian column from 1665. The “woman column” was on the occasion of the victory of Montecuccoli over the Ottomans near St. Gotthard / Mogersdorf (1664). The statue on the "Turkish Column" originally looked in the opposite direction.

technology
Gleisdorf is considered a shopping city, but is also a technology location, which is expressed in the choice of topics for belonging to a Styrian LEADER region . This bears the title "Weiz-Gleisdorf Energy Region" . As a “solar city”, Gleisdorf is dedicated to renewable energies ; in contrast to the first LEADER cultural project in Styria that started in this city. The main topics “Energy Region” are - according to this topic and economic situation - energy self-sufficiency and mobility.
The use of photovoltaics is not just based on a private initiative, but is also being promoted - along with other measures - by the municipal Feistritzwerke STEWEAG GmbH . The company is largely owned by the municipality and, together with the parent company of Stadtwerke Gleisdorf, takes care of the secure supply of electricity, heat and water as well as waste disposal with innovative projects.
With “Ingenos ZT GmbH” one of the largest civil engineering offices in Austria belongs to the city. With the "AEE INTEC", Gleisdorf houses the second largest research facility in Austria on the subject of "Renewable Energy", which founded the Renewable Energy Working Group in 1988 .
traffic
Highway
In December 1969, the Graz -leisdorf section of the A 2 southern motorway was opened. Years later, the Gleisdorf- Hartberg section was built as an economy motorway on the route of the Vienna carriageway and released as a two-way traffic area. The full expansion of this 42-kilometer section only took place after numerous serious traffic accidents, which were caused by the lack of structural separation of the lanes. Junction points for the A 2 in the Gleisdorf area are Gleisdorf-Süd (157) and Gleisdorf-West (161).
Federal highways
Gleisdorf is located on four former federal highways :
- B 54 Wechsel Street : Ludersdorf-Wilfersdorf - Gleisdorf - Hartberg - Wechselpass - Aspang - Wiener Neustadt
- B 64 Rechberg Strasse : Gleisdorf - Weiz - Frohnleiten
- B 65 Gleisdorfer Straße : Graz - Gleisdorf - Ilz - Fürstenfeld - state border with Hungary near Heiligenkreuz in the Lafnitz valley
- B 68 Feldbacher Strasse : Gleisdorf - Feldbach
railroad
Gleisdorf train station is located in the southwest of the city. It was put into operation as a through station on May 1, 1873 with the opening of the last section of the Styrian Eastern Railway from Jennersdorf to Graz . Since August 28, 1889, Gleisdorf has also been the starting point and connecting station of the Gleisdorf - Weiz regional railway .
In 1999 the Gleisdorf train station was expanded into a traffic hub at a cost of 155 million schillings. As part of the project, a platform tunnel and a covered island platform with a tongue platform were built for the Weizer Bahn. The Mühlstrasse railway crossing in the station area was replaced by an underpass, the bus station relocated and Park & Ride parking spaces and covered parking spaces for bicycles were built.
In 2000, an electronic interlocking ESTW SMC 86 was put into operation. The Laßnitzhöhe station as well as the operational switches Laßnitzthal (train stop) and Autal are remotely controlled from here.
The Park & Ride facility in the station area since 1999, with a capacity of 95 two-wheeler parking spaces and 163 parking spaces, was expanded by a further 64 to 227 parking spaces by the end of October 2013. The third expansion of the Park & Ride facility to date was completed in October 2015, increasing the capacity to a total of 350 car parking spaces and 190 two-wheeler parking spaces, including 110 bicycle parking spaces.
All regional, regional express and S-Bahn trains of the Ostbahn, as well as all trains of the branch line to Weiz, which have another stop in Gleisdorf West, stop in Gleisdorf Bahnhof. With the timetable change in December 2019, there are 63 train connections with Graz (30 to Graz and 33 from Graz) on working days from Monday to Friday, as well as 50 with Weiz (25 each from and to Weiz), a total of 113 trains per day, which are scheduled from four platforms run. On weekdays except Saturday, there are 5 direct S-Bahn trains from Weiz to Graz, as well as from Graz to Weiz, which head in Gleisdorf. On Saturdays, if working days, there are 38 train connections with Graz (18 of them to Graz and 20 from Graz), as well as 14 train connections with Weiz, a total of 52 trains daily that run according to schedule. 34 train connections with Graz are offered on Sundays and public holidays (17 each to Graz and 17 from Graz). The train station in Laßnitzthal, located on the Ostbahn, has been the third S-Bahn station in the municipality of Gleisdorf since January 1, 2015. Passenger traffic on the branch line from Gleisdorf to Weiz is suspended on Sundays and public holidays.
After completing the most important route construction measures (alternate stations and stops, information and safety technology), line 3 of the Styrian S-Bahn started on December 12, 2010 on the route of the Eastern Railway . The branch line from Gleisdorf to Weiz was integrated into the S-Bahn network as line S 31. With the timetable change in December 2018, the train service on line S 31 was expanded on working days and improved in peripheral locations and on Saturdays. The shutdown of the S 31 on Sundays and public holidays was retained. All major regional bus routes travel to Gleisdorf station with their courses, where the stops are set up on the station forecourt or within a short walking distance to it and enable the scheduled change in public transport.
A new line Gleisdorf - Graz is in the official test procedure and should be realized in the next decade. The route is to be run along the existing A 2 motorway, cross under the Laßnitzhöhe in a base tunnel and then connect in Raaba near Graz with the existing route to Graz, and in the Feldkirchen near Graz area with the Koralm railway, which is currently under construction . The NBS will also run direct freight trains to and from the Werndorf Terminal in order to improve its connection via the Eastern Railway to Hungary. After commissioning of the NBS between Gleisdorf and Graz, a condensed PNV is to be run on the existing route via Laßnitzhöhe as a rapid or urban railway.
bicycle
Gleisdorf is on the R11 cycle path, the Raab Valley cycle path, which leads from the origin of the Raab near Passail to Szentgotthárd in Hungary. The pilgrim (bike) away from Kleinmariazell to Mariazell also leads through Gleisdorf.
