Châteaubourg ( Breton Kastell-Bourc'h ; Gallo Chastèu-Bórg ) is a French commune with 7064 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany and belongs to the canton of Châteaugiron . The place got its name from a castle that dominated the crossing of the Vilaine River from the 11th to 15th centuries. The church of St. Pierre was built on its ruins in 1893. The municipalities of Saint-Melaine and Broons-sur-Vilaine also belong to the city .
geography
Châteaubourg is located in the Fougères-Vitré arrondissement . Until 2015 it was the capital of the then dissolved canton of Châteaubourg .
Located between Rennes and Vitré on the La Vilaine river, the municipality is connected to traffic by Route nationale 157 and the Paris – Brest railway line. Due to its convenient location, the population grew by 60% in 20 years (1988–2008).
There are four watermills and one mill in the town, as well as a 17th century castle, the Château de la Fontanelle .
