Sessenheim is a French commune with 2315 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ), about 40 kilometers northeast of Strasbourg . The southernmost part of the street settlement is called Dengolsheim and is passed by the department road D468.

The place was best known through Goethe and his love for the Sessenheim pastor's daughter Friederike Brion ( Sesenheimer Lieder ), which made the community a place of pilgrimage for numerous Goethe admirers.

Surname

The place is called in German as in French "Sessenheim"; the spelling “Sesenheim”, which was widespread by Goethe, is also widespread.

Because of the above-mentioned popularity of the place, the place name Sähsene , which is common in Strasbourg, is mostly used today in Alsace , although the inhabitants themselves call their place Sähsem .

Attractions

In today's rectory there is a small museum in which some memorabilia of Friederike and her father are shown. However, the original residential buildings have not been preserved. Only the Goethe barn can still be visited. In addition, a Goethe memorial commemorates the famous lovers. This former sentry box, which looks like a small antique temple, has housed various documents and pictures in two rooms since 1961.

Another local attraction is the church on Rue de l'Eglise. In the days of Goethe and Friederike it was already there, but has since been rebuilt a bit. The grave slabs of Friederike Brion's parents are walled in on the south wall.

On the road in the direction of Stattmatten you get to what the people of Sessenheim would later call Goethe Hill. After crossing the railway line you will find it on the right. Today it bears the name "Friederikenruh".

Personalities

In addition to Goethe and Friederike Brion, the painter Henri Loux (1873–1907), whose paintings still adorn traditional Alsatian dishes, was associated with the town of Sessenheim. He spent his childhood there.

Georg Atzel (* 1845, † after 1918) was a member of the state parliament and mayor of Sessenheim.
