The 1987/88 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 30th season of the top German division. The German champion was the Cologne EC , which won its third championship title in a row and sixth overall. The last time EV Füssen celebrated three titles in a row in the championship years 1963 to 1965.
The season was overshadowed by the financial collapse of the ECD Iserlohn , which had to withdraw from game operations after 27 match days, whereupon all games of the Sauerlanders were not counted. In the relegation, newcomer BSC Preussen was able to assert itself as a Bundesliga club. In addition, the successor club of the former Bundesliga club ERC Freiburg, the EHC Freiburg, returned to the league. For the eliminated ECD Iserlohn, EC Ratingen moved up from the 2nd Bundesliga in the relegation.

Relegation round
The relegation round was played in a single round, so that each team played a home and an away game against the other clubs. During the game between EV Füssen and EC Hedos Munich, the Füssen player Wilhelm Hofer succumbed to heart failure. The game was canceled after 2 thirds when the score was 3: 4 and then rated 0: 5. Füssen did not play for the second game this weekend in Bad Nauheim. This game was temporarily rated 5-0 for Bad Nauheim and Bad Nauheim wanted compensation for the lost home game. It was agreed that the game on the last matchday would not be played in Füssen, but in Bad Nauheim. Shortly before the end of the round, they managed to catch up on the failed game in Füssen during the week.
