Hans Mangold (cyclist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Mangold (born January 12, 1939 in Mannheim ; † June 12, 1997 in Heiligkreuz ) was a German racing cyclist and cycling trainer.

From the late 1950s to the mid 1960s, Hans Mangold was one of the most successful amateur cyclists on a national level . He was eleven times German champion in various disciplines on track and road : 1957, 1960 and 1961 in the single pursuit , from 1957 six times in a row in the team pursuit with the team of his club RRC final spurt 1924 Mannheim , for the u. a. The brothers Rudi and Willi Altig also drove. In 1962 and 1963 he won the title in the two-man team and in the same years in the team time trial . He has also stood on the podium numerous times at national championships. His trainer Karl Ziegler was responsible for his nickname "Der Hirsch" because he considered him to be the "top dog" as a track chaser in Germany.

At a Mannheim district championship, Mangold and Rudi Altig made a joke: They were the first to cross the finish line arm in arm. For this they were disqualified for "not taking their chances" and the third, Willi Altig, was declared the winner.

After his active time, Mangold worked from 1969 to 1971 as assistant to national coach Karl Ziegler , then as a teacher. He died of heart failure on a bike ride.
