Diether Dehm (2014)

Jörg-Diether Wilhelm Dehm-Desoi (born April 3, 1950 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German music producer , songwriter and politician ( SPD / PDS / Die Linke ). From 1999 to 2003 he was one of the deputy federal chairmen of the PDS, from 2004 to 2010 he was state chairman of his party in Lower Saxony. Until 2016 he was Treasurer of the European Left . He was a member of the German Bundestag in 1994 and has been a member again since 2005. In the 1970s Dehm worked for the Ministry for State Security (MfS) as an unofficial employee (IM). The song 1000 und 1 Nacht (Zoom!) He co-wrote was in the charts for many weeks in 1984. One of Dehm's stage names was Lerryn .

education and profession

Diether Dehm was born as the son of the locksmith and soccer player Otto Dehm and his wife Inge, a commercial clerk in Frankfurt am Main.

Dehm attended the Frankfurt Helmholtz School , studied special and curative education and passed the diploma examination in 1972 ; In 1975 he was promoted to Dr. phil is doing his doctorate .

He is managing director of the music publisher "Edition Musikant GmbH", on the shareholder committee of Hitradio FFH , author, entrepreneur and Member of the Bundestag . From 2004 Dehm was a lecturer at the University of Fulda , where he taught cultural management and creative writing . Dehm is a member of the German Lyricist Association , the European Association of Independent Germany and a member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council.

Music and cultural projects

In the late 1960s, Dehm began writing and performing his own protest songs. He was a prizewinner at the Essen International Song Festival for his song career . LPs with songs by him are: … fights for human rights (produced in 1977/78 for the SPD member magazine), the singer with the better songs; Goya paints Charles IV (1982 with Albert Mangelsdorff , Manfred Schoof , Heiner Goebbels and others); Different (with bots 1984); Workers' songs (with Heiner Goebbels and others); The soft water (1988 with Willy Brandt , Heinz Rudolf Kunze , Götz George , Senta Berger and others).

For a while, Dehm used the stage name "Lerryn", for the creation of which there are different narratives. He himself said he picked the name after the Scottish town of Lerryn by tapping a map with his eyes closed. According to taz and Spiegel, on the other hand, "Lerryn" is a portmanteau word from two of Dehm's nicknames, namely Larry and Lenin .

Diether Dehm as Lerryn, 1976

In 1971 Dehm founded the municipal series Lieder im Park in Frankfurt , which was then copied by several German cities. He worked closely with Hilmar Hoffmann , the Frankfurt Head of Culture, who recommended some of Dehm's cultural projects in his books for imitation. In 1974 he was one of the members of the coordination committee of the AG Song - working group of songwriters , which at times comprised 1,400 songwriters.

Dehm translated some songs by the Dutch folk rock band Bots into German, including the well-known song title Was woll'n we drink for 7 days, The soft water breaks the stone and gets up. From 1980 he worked as an author and co-author of various music, rock and cabaret artists such as Klaus Lage , Dieter Hildebrandt and Albert Mangelsdorff .

In 1983 he founded his own record label Musikant under the umbrella of EMI Elektrola. In 1985 he was involved in the founding of the Artists in Action Association, and together with Klaus Lage, Udo Lindenberg , Heinz-Rudolf Kunze and Dietmar Schönherr, he became board spokesman.

He is the author of various entertainment and satire programs on television (e.g. Hurray Germany or Öko-SAT with Stephan Wald , Ingolf Lück , Hans Werner Olm ). From 1989 he was manager and media advisor to Katarina Witt , Klaus Lage, bots, Stoppok and Andreas Wecker . From 1990 Dehm worked on the 1996 television film Die Eisprinzessin , text and music Diether Dehm, in the title role of Katarina Witt. Dehms Musical Stars was premiered in Nordhausen in 1996 .

Dehm has published over 600 songs on sound carriers (mostly as a songwriter ), among others with and for Joe Cocker , Curtis Stigers , La Bouche , Christopher Cross , Ute Lemper , the drum performance Stomp and in Germany with and for Klaus Lage, Anne Haigis , bots, Heinz Rudolf Kunze , Udo Lindenberg , Emma, Stoppok, Albert Mangelsdorff, Wolfgang Dauner , Hans Werner Henze , Tony Carey , Zupfgeigenhansel , Gisela May , Sebastian Krumbiegel , Geier Sturzflug . His best-selling song is 1000 und 1 Nacht (Zoom!) , Which the Klaus-Lage-Band recorded in 1984, but also became famous for the Tatort song Faust auf Faust (Schimanski) (1985), which the band also played .

In 2000 the milk maid report was created , which was performed in the Berliner Ensemble and in the Staatstheater Kassel. For years, Dehm has been working with artists such as Peter Sodann , Konstantin Wecker , Rolf Hochhuth and the Thuringian band Emma .

In 2006 Dehm's album Adelante con Rosa, Brecht y Che was released, on which he processed texts by Pete Seeger , Rosa Luxemburg , Che Guevara and Bertolt Brecht , among others . On the 2012 CD Grosse Liebe.Reloaded by the band project “Diadem”, he interprets his own songs as well as titles by the Beatles .

politics

The hawks

Dehm became a member of the Falcons in his youth .

SPD

At the age of 15 Dehm joined the SPD (Hessen-Süd district), where he was initially active in their youth organization Jusos .

For the 1990 Bundestag election, he ran on the state list of the Hesse SPD. In 1993 he was elected to the municipal authorities of the city of Frankfurt, of which he was a member until 1997. On August 18, 1994 he moved to the Bundestag for Barbara Weiler .

From 1995 to 1997 he was federal chairman of the working group for self-employed in the SPD . 1997 Dehm was elected deputy federal chairman of the SPD entrepreneurs. He supported cultural and magazine projects, including the magazine spw - magazine for socialist politics and economy .

Over the parliamentary preparations for the war in Yugoslavia , he increasingly came into conflict with the SPD leadership and finally left the party in 1998 together with 24 other Frankfurt Social Democrats.

PDS

On the day of the 1998 Bundestag election he joined the PDS and was one of its deputy federal chairmen from 1999 to 2003 . He was re-elected twice. His Bundestag candidacy as the top candidate of the PDS Lower Saxony in September 2002 was unsuccessful because the PDS missed the five percent hurdle .

In the subsequent so-called guard book affair about Dehm and the previous PDS federal managing director Dietmar Bartsch , Dehm denied having instructed a security guard at party headquarters to ensure that Bartsch did not remove any documents from the house. The incident was one of the reasons for Gabi Zimmer's resignation in 2003 . At the extraordinary party congress that followed in July, Dehm failed with his re-election to the federal executive committee of the PDS.

In March 2003 Dehm ran for the mayor's office in the southern Baden town of Lörrach, which is near the German-Swiss border, and achieved 17.7%, the highest result of the PDS in an election in the west of the Federal Republic. The SPD had not put up its own candidate against the incumbent CDU mayor.

In 2004 he became state chairman of the PDS Lower Saxony and, as the top candidate of the Linkspartei.PDS for the Bundestag election in Lower Saxony in 2005 , rejoined the German Bundestag , to which he has been a member since then.

From November 2005 to December 2009 Dehm was chairman of the Left Party-related business association OWUS .

The left

Diether Dehm, 2019

On September 8, 2007, he was on the Lower Saxony founding congress in Hanover along with Kreszentia Flauger in a dual leadership elected chairman of the National Association of the left. Under his leadership, he gained 7.1% of the votes in the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2008 . In November 2008 he was re-elected state chairman with 81%. In the 2009 Bundestag elections , Dehm again entered the Bundestag as the top candidate of the Lower Saxony Left. At the 2nd Federal Party Congress in Rostock in May 2010, he was elected to the party executive committee, of which he was a member until 2014. In November 2010 he did not run again in the election for the state chairmanship of his party in Lower Saxony.

In December 2010, Dehm was elected Treasurer of the European Left in Paris and was again entrusted with this task at the 2013 Congress in Madrid. The project "European cultural network" belongs to his area of responsibility. This idea was developed in discussions with Gregor Gysi , Pierre Laurent , Mikis Theodorakis and the Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia .

Dehm is one of five members of the Bundestag left from Lower Saxony . Constituency offices are located in Hanover and Wolfsburg . Dehm is the European policy spokesman for his group and a member of the Committee on European Union Affairs . Another field of activity is his work as spokesman for SMEs for the Left Party in the Bundestag . He is also deputy chairman of the “Foreign Cultural and Educational Policy” subcommittee and a deputy member of the Committee on Culture and Media and the Committee on Economy and Energy .

Additional income as a member of the Bundestag

At the beginning of the 19th legislative period of the Bundestag, Dehm stated stakes in three companies as well as level 4 ancillary income (EUR 15,000 to 30,000 annually).

Controversies and positions

Cooperation with the Ministry of State Security

In March 1990, the then CDU MP Erika Steinbach described Dehm as a "Stasi informant". Dehm had the testimony forbidden. In 1996 Stasi documents emerged according to which he, as unofficial employees (IM) "Dieter" and IM "Willy", had informed the State Security Department XX / 5 from 1971 to 1978. In addition, Steinbach submitted an affidavit from Wolf Biermann , according to which Dehm, as his manager at the time, had confessed his Stasi contacts to him in a one-on-one conversation on May 29, 1988. The Frankfurt am Main regional court then lifted the ban in 1996. An SPD expulsion process against him was discontinued in 1996. His internal party legal advisor was Horst Winterstein . According to Horst Winterstein, the Stasi files began in 1972 with an attempt by the Stasi to shape Dehm into a "perspective IM" - that is, to train him to become an MfS spy; allegedly this attempt ended in vain in 1977 because Dehm had spoken out in public for Biermann and Bahro. According to Winterstein, the MfS even marked Dehm as an enemy of the state and put him on the "GDR immigration search". This representation was resolutely contradicted by scientists who deal with the SED dictatorship. In his autobiography, published in 2016, Wolf Biermann refers to various documents available in the Stasi records authority , which clearly prove Dehm's activity as an informant. Many meeting reports from "IM Willy" and "IM Christa" with the command officers between 1971 and 1978 were recorded. For example, the September 4, 1978 report describes a flight to West Berlin. From there the IMs drove to East Berlin in the GDR to meet with their commanding officers of the MfS. The flight costs of 350 DM West were therefore reimbursed. As early as 1977, “IM Willy” was proposed by the MfS for an award with a monetary bonus of 500 DM West with the following words: “The IM works reliably, on the basis of political convictions, with the MfS. ... succeeded in temporarily getting Biermann under good control in the operating area after his expatriation. The IM compiled valuable information on the person of the Biermann, his plans and intentions as well as the political effectiveness ... ”.

According to the historian Hubertus Knabe, the MfS recruited Dehm in December 1971 on the basis of political conviction as IM "Dieter" (later renamed IM "Willy").

According to his 400-page file, he reported to the MfS in particular about the Frankfurt Young Socialists and the SPD district of Hessen-Süd. After the songwriter Wolf Biermann was expatriated from the GDR, he also delivered numerous reports as his concert manager. According to Wolf Biermann, Dehm was praised by the State Security in 1977 for its reliability.

The court rulings, according to which Dehm may be called an informant for the State Security Service, are based on Biermann's testimony about his surveillance in the West. Dehm signed several receipts for sums of money of several hundred marks with his real name and in other cases as IM "Willy".

Dehm claims that, like his wife (alias IM "Christa"), the MfS has not recruited, but has only been skimmed off. In their file it can be found that Dehm had “concrete knowledge of the evaluation of his information by the Ministry for State Security”.

Confrontation with Joachim Gauck

Before the federal presidential election, Dehm described the presidential candidate Joachim Gauck as a "well poisoner" and a "witch hunter", whose speeches were "libelous squawks".

On the fringes of the 14th Federal Assembly on June 30, 2010, for which Christian Wulff (CDU) and Joachim Gauck had been nominated as the most promising candidates, a journalist from ZDF asked him whether he should vote for Gauck now. Dehm's sent reply was:

“... What would you do if you had the choice between Stalin and Hitler ? What would you do if you had a choice between plague and cholera? These are hypothetical questions. Why should I choose between something that means both war and a lot of suffering for Hartz IV recipients and, by the way, a lot of suffering also for trade unionists in this country? "

The next day, Dehm apologized to the two presidential candidates if they "should feel close to Hitler and Stalin". Renate Künast ( Greens ), on the other hand, demanded a “real apology” from Dehm for his Stalin- Hitler comparison . There was also criticism of the comparison from leading politicians in his own party. André Brie, on the other hand, advocated not taking Dehm too seriously, as he "came out with anti-Semitic conspiracy theories".

Joachim Gauck later emphatically rejected Dehm's apology.

Criminal proceedings

On May 21, 2013, Dehm was sentenced by the Lüneburg District Court to a fine of 15 daily rates of 150 euros each by the Lüneburg District Court on May 21, 2013 for a call to mass ballast , i.e. to dig out ballast stones from the track bed along the Castor route towards Gorleben .

In 2015, Dehm had to pay a fine of 3,000 euros for showing a flag belonging to the banned Kurdish organization Workers' Party of Kurdistan (PKK).

Ukraine crisis and "vigil for peace"

In April 2014, in an interview with the Russian state broadcaster Voice of Russia on the Ukraine conflict , Dehm stated that US secret services had an influence on the reporting of German media. His own parliamentary group in the Bundestag immediately distanced itself from this statement.

On June 9, 2014, Dehm appeared at one of the vigils for peace at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin against the background of the Ukraine crisis with spoken and singing contributions. In doing so, he set himself in opposition to the federal executive committee of his party, which at the end of May had distanced itself from the " right-wing populists , nationalists , conspiracy theorists and anti-Semites " who would use these events to "make right-wing populist models of explaining the world and ' cross-front ' strategies socially acceptable". With these forces the left will "fundamentally not work together". Dehm justified himself by referring to the great applause that his sharp words against anti-Semitism had found in the audience. At the demonstration he “neither heard nor saw anti-Semites”. The Berlin state chairman of the Left, Klaus Lederer, regretted that Dehm ignored the party executive's decision that his behavior would be discussed in the federal executive . As early as 2009 Dehm had declared in this context: "Anti-Semitism is mass murder and must be reserved for mass murder". This brought him the reproach from Felix Bartels that he was calling for anti-Semitism to be talked about only when masses of Jews were being killed again, and that, like Konrad Adenauer in the final line debate, he wanted to prevent “Nazi smells”.

The left parliamentary group decided on December 16, 2014 with regard to the "winter of peace", which Ken Jebsen and Lars Mährholz had called for, that their financial means would no longer support events if the organizers of the Monday vigils were responsible for these gatherings. At the "Peace Winter" demonstration three days earlier, Dehm had marched with Jebsen at the head of the train.

When in 2014 Xavier Naidoo was criticized for his closeness to the Reich Citizens Movement and the “vigils”, Dehm defended him and described the critics as “ anti-German Shitstorm- SA ”.

When a group presumably close to the Kremlin in the Russian social network VKontakte (VK) posted a photo of the Ukrainian city of Lviv wearing a swastika , Dehm shared it on Twitter as alleged evidence of neo-fascism in Ukraine, without questioning the origin of the image. In fact, it came from making a film about the Nazi occupation of Ukraine . Dehm later deleted the picture, but in the interests of the Russian government, which tried to defame Ukraine as a fascist state, he contributed to the spread of false reports on the Internet.

Employment of the former RAF terrorist Christian Klar

In February 2016 it became known that Dehm had been employing the former RAF terrorist for several years and Christian Klar, who had been convicted of multiple murders in 1985, as a freelancer for the technical maintenance of the Bundestag's website. The facts became known when Dehm applied for a house ID from the Bundestag for Klar and this was rejected. Members of the CDU / CSU sharply criticized the employment relationship.

refugees

Dehm commented on the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 : "People", "the armaments industry", had "done enormous business with the causes of the refugee crisis". One must therefore “ask those who have thrown bombs on Syria” to “pay”. According to him, this would affect the USA and the German arms industry. The money could be used, for example, to build the social housing required. Furthermore, Dehm describes it as "completely wrong" to refer to all people as racists who express "concerns". Instead, you have to have an “open ear” for the “worries” of the “so-called 'little people”. Even though Europe cannot be “fenced in”, the “ refugee influx ” must be limited in the long term, although politically persecuted people should be given unlimited asylum . To implement it, Dehm calls for “a just world economic order” and an end to the bombing of states like Libya : “ Nobody told the USA to bomb Gaddafi, he still had the state - for all its madness - under control somewhere and everyone the third dollar he took in he put into the welfare state. "

In September 2016, Dehm declared that he had brought an underage African half-orphan in the trunk of his vehicle unnoticed and without registration from Italy via Switzerland to his father in Germany. He was "at peace" with himself. As Dehm confirmed to the taz on September 23, 2016 , the public prosecutor's office applied for the lifting of his political immunity based on a criminal complaint in order to be able to initiate the investigation into aiding and abetting illegal entry. Dehm was by former members of parliament Peter Gauweiler ( CSU ) right lawyer represented. The proceedings were discontinued due to a lack of sufficient suspicion.

middle East

In July 2018, Dehm spoke out against the inclusion of Syrian white helmets , among which he suspected proponents of terrorism and violence as well as gray wolves and Turkish secret service employees. Dehm sees the photo taken by the White Helmets as "undermining the political right of asylum won by anti-fascists" if they are granted "the same rights and standards" as political refugees.

At the end of 2019, Dehm and seven other members of the left-wing parliamentary group issued a joint statement against a motion by the Greens in the Bundestag, in which they called for a ban on the Lebanese Islamist group Hezbollah .

Support for Ken Jebsen

When, in autumn 2017, the Babylon cinema in Berlin had temporarily canceled an award ceremony planned for the journalist Ken Jebsen after criticism from Berlin's Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (Die Linke) and Lederer's approach was also supported by a decision by the Federal Executive Committee of the Left Party Dehm together with Wolfgang Gehrcke and Christiane Reymann for a protest rally in front of the neighboring Left Party Federal Headquarters against “ censorship ”, but announced shortly after that it was “quite unlikely that [he] could be there” because he was “not against the party talk or act ”, but added:“ However, as an artist, I would never let my party prohibit me from playing a song ”. Dehm then finally appeared against his own party as a supporter at the rally against his own party, contrary to his announcement and in disregard of a party board decision. The blog that awarded the prize, NRhZ-Online , successfully took legal action against the termination by the cinema. Musical accompaniment for the award ceremony was also announced by Die Breite and Gilad Atzmon . Atzmon, who is accused of using anti-Semitic stereotypes, was banned from the cinema , and Jebsen canceled his participation in the award ceremony. Two of Dehm's companies, Weltnetz TV and Musikverlag Musikant, sponsored the award ceremony. Shortly afterwards, Christian Bommarius accused Dehm of ignorance of anti-Semitism in an editorial in the Frankfurter Rundschau , referring to his 2009 statement that anti-Semitism was mass murder and should be reserved for mass murder.

Relationship to freedom of the press

After Dehm insulted Tagesspiegel editor Matthias Meisner , who has been reporting on the PDS and the Left since 1999, as a "writing agent" from the " BND gas station " and Meisner complained about it, the party leaders Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger demanded their own Parliamentary group to deal fairly with critical journalists. “For historical reasons and also with regard to current events,” Kipping emphasized, “that the freedom of the press is and will remain a great good for the left.” Federal Managing Director Harald Wolf described Dehms “statements [as] completely out of place”. They would “dispense with any factual discussion”. In March 2018, Dehm repeated his accusation against Matthias Meisner and suggested that the two journalists Christian Bommarius and Markus Decker ( DuMont main city editorial office) also obtained their information from the secret service.

Verbal attack on Heiko Maas

At the beginning of April 2018, Dehm described Foreign Minister Heiko Maas as a "well-styled NATO stick boy " during a Berlin Easter March . The background to the statement was the expulsion of Russian diplomats from several NATO countries in response to the nerve agent attack on the double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter. The chairman of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district assembly, Oliver Nöll, then applied to initiate party regulation proceedings against Dehm with the aim of expulsion. However, Dehm received encouragement for his attack on Maas from the ranks of the Alternative for Germany party . The Berlin Left Party leader Katina Schubert commented on the incident by stating that Dehm “ continued to harm the left with his cross-front activities, defamatory comparisons, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements”. In connection with the verbal jury , which was perceived as homophobic and sexist, Dehm was accused of having played a large part in the threatening split of the left into a cosmopolitan and a traditional camp. Shortly thereafter, Dehm said in this regard: "I am happy to apologize to every sex worker, who all have a nobler motivation than compliant NATO politicians."

Home and nation

Dehm advocates not leaving the term “home” to the right and warned against trying to suppress feelings of home through “educational dictatorship”. The National Socialists had stolen the terms “national” and “socialist” from the left and the left would be foolish if they did not bring them back. In response to Dehm's rejection of a constitution for the European Union , MEP Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann (PDS) wrote that “no sharp dividing line between German-national anti-EU positions is recognizable”.

Failed criminal complaint against Chancellor Merkel

Together with seven other members of the Left Party filed Dehm the attorney general end of February 2020 in connection with the killing of the Iranian General Ghassem Soleimani by a US drone criminal charges against Angela Merkel and other members of the federal government for aid to the murder by omission . The federal prosecutor saw no suspicion. Dehm's action met with criticism inside and outside his party.
