Julia ( Latin Iulia ) is a female given name .
Origin and meaning
The name Julia means "of the Julier family" and originally referred to the female members of the Roman gens Iulia . These derived their name from Iulus , the grandson of the goddess Venus .

The name became popular as a first name, particularly through Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet .
In the 19th century the name variant Julie was very common, while the first name Julia was only occasionally given in Germany before 1975. From around 1975 to 2005, Julia was among the 20 most popular first names for girls in Germany. Therefore, the first name is now very common.
