Location of the Kemnitz district in Dresden
Seal mark of the municipality of Kemnitz (between 1850 and 1923)

Kemnitz is a district of Dresden and belongs to the Cotta district . It is located in the west of Dresden at the mouth of the Zschonerbach in the Elbe between the districts of Briesnitz and Stetzsch . It is counted to the statistical district Briesnitz , within which the district forms the statistical district 982 Kemnitz.

history

The former village of Kemnitz was first mentioned in a document in 1254. As in Chemnitz, the place name of the originally Slavic settlement comes from the Sorbian word kamica and means something like Steinbach (cf. Sorbian kamjeń , 'stone'). In 1324 the village comprised six Hufen and a garden and a mill. In that year it became the property of the Meissen canons Heinrich and Albrecht von Guben .

The district on the west bank of the Elbe is characterized by the Elbe bridge of the federal motorway 4 , for the construction of which in 1935 the old town center with most of the old farms and the former village inn had to be demolished to make room for the Dresden-Altstadt junction create. The mill originally mentioned in 1324 was also located here, which should not have been identical to the Weltemühle in Zschonergrund.

Around 1900, the number of inhabitants in Kemnitz increased and in the period that followed, further settlements emerged in the upper locality of the Elbe slope and in the west of Kemnitz. In 1890 the community still had 306 inhabitants, but by 1910 the population had risen to 1,372. On April 1, 1921, Kemnitz was finally incorporated into Dresden together with Briesnitz , Stetzsch and Leutewitz .
