initial situation
The favorites for this competition were primarily the two Americans Trey Hardee and Ashton Eaton. Hardee had won the title at the 2009 and 2011 world championships, while Eaton, runner-up in 2011, had set a new world record in the run-up to the London Games . The 2008 Olympic champion Bryan Clay, also USA, was not there in London. The expanded group of favorites included the Cuban Leonel Suárez, who was third in the 2011 World Cup and vice world champion in 2009, as well as the German Pascal Behrenbruch, who became European champion a few weeks before the games and also started as World Cup sixth in 2009 and World Cup seventh in 2011 .
Summary
Over 100 meters , the first discipline, Eaton was the fastest with 10.35 s, ahead of Hardee - 10.42 s - and the Canadian Damian Warner - 10.48 s. He was followed by the Ukrainian Oleksij Kasjanow with 10.56 s and the German Rico Freimuth with 10.65 s. The two favorites from the United States were already at the front after the first discipline.
In the long jump Eaton continued to its next level. At 8.03 m, he was the only one to exceed the 8-meter mark. The Belgian Hans Van Alphen - 7.64 m - and Kurt Felix from Grenada - 7.63 m followed a long way behind. Kasyanow - 7.55 m, Warner - 7.54 m - and Hardee - 7.53 m - clearly lost ground here. Eaton now led with 2079 points. He was already 143 points ahead of Hardee, 154 points ahead of Warner and 171 points ahead of Kasyanow. All the other decathletes were already more than two hundred points behind.
In the shot put , Kazakhs Dmitri Karpov was the only participant to exceed the 16-meter mark with 16.47 m. This was followed by Behrenbruch, who was disappointing in the first two disciplines - 15.67 m, Van Alphen - 15.48 m, German Jan Felix Knobel - 15.29 m - and Hardee - 15.28 m. Eaton hit 14.66 m and maintained his lead in the overall standings with 2848 points. Hardee was second, 105p behind, while Kasyanov was third, 184p. It was followed by Van Alphen - 199 P, Warner - 201 P, Karpow - 213 P and Freimuth - 272 P.
In the high jump , Suárez showed himself at his best with 2.11 m. With that he exceeded the next seven decathletes by six centimeters. Eaton, Van Alphen, Warner, the South African Willem Coertzen, the Chilean Gonzalo Barroilhet, the French Kevin Mayer and Felix jumped 2.05 m. Hardee and Kasyanow fell further back with 1.99 m. Eaton continued to be the clear leader with 3698 P. Hardee was 137P behind him. Van Alphen had improved to third with a deficit of 209 p, Warner was two points behind fourth ahead of Kasyanow, who was another 29 points behind. Karpov followed 279 P behind Eaton in sixth ahead of Suarez. Its deficit on Eaton was 292 P.
In the 400 meter run , the final discipline of the first day, Eaton was again the fastest with 46.90 seconds. It was followed by Freimuth - 48.06 s, Hardee - 48.11 s, Warner - 48.20 s and the Brazilian Luiz Alberto de Araújo - 48.25 s. Kasyanov scored 48.44 s. Suárez fell back significantly with 49.04 s, but his better second day was still ahead of him. After five disciplines, Eaton was in the lead with a strong 4661 points. Hardee was second, 222 p. Back, Warner was third - 285 p back, followed by Kasjanow - 325 p, Van Alphen - 329 p and Suárez - 396 p.
On the second day, the 110 meter hurdles were beaten by Hardee with 13.54 s, Eaton with 13.56 s and Freimuth with 13.89 s. The closest to them came Kasyanov and Barroilhet - 14.09 s - 14.12 s. Suárez ran with 14.45 s not as fast as in competitions before. Eaton already had 5693 points in his account. Hardee had caught up three tiny points but was still well behind by 217p. The order behind them had changed little, but the gaps had increased again. Warner was third with 381 points, Kasyanow was fourth, 384 points behind Eaton. It was followed by Van Alphen, who was 488 P behind Eaton. Freimuth was now sixth - 498 P, Suárez seventh - 511 P and Karpow eighth - 528 P on the front runner.
In the discus throw Freimuth took further on. He reached 49.11 m, with which he achieved the greatest distance here. But the gaps were close. Van Alphen scored 48.28 m, Hardee 48.26 m, the Russian Swiridow 47.43 m and Kasyanow 46.72 m. Warner came to 45.90 m Suarez to 45.70 m. Eaton was a little more behind with 42.53 m for the first time. In the interim standings, things continued to look good for him, he had 6409 points on his account. Hardee had clearly caught up and was only 99 p behind his compatriot. This was followed by Kasjanow - 299 P back, Warner - 412 P, Freimuth - 462 P, Van Alphen - 469 P - and Suárez - 445 P back.
The best pole vaulter was Barroilhet with 5.40 m. The Dutchman Eelco Sintnicolaas crossed 5.30 m, followed by Eaton with 5.20 m. With the two Russians Ilya Schkurenjow and Karpow - each 5.10 m - two athletes surpassed the 5-meter mark. Freimuth reached 4.90 m, Hardee and Van Alphen each 4.80 m, Suárez and Warner each 4.70 m. At the top with 7381 points was Eaton, who was now more than two hundred points ahead. 222 P behind, Hardee was still second. The third place was now 354 P behind Eaton Freimuth. Warner was fourth - 465 P behind Kasjanow - 480 P, Van Alphen - 492 P, Karpow - 510 P and Suárez - 598 P. The Cuban was 244 P behind on the bronze place. That was a lot, but as a brilliant javelin thrower the situation was not yet hopeless. Otherwise, the distribution of gold and silver seemed pretty clear, while the battle for bronze with numerous athletes was still completely open.
As expected, Suárez was by far the best javelin thrower with his 76.94 m. Nobody but him exceeded the 70-meter mark. Swiridow was the second best decathlete with 68.42 m, followed by Hardee - 68.42 m, followed by the Japanese Keisuke Ushiro - 66.38 m and Behrenbruch - 64.80 m. Of the top athletes, Warner was 62.77 m, Eaton 61.96 m and Van Alphen - 61.69 m. Freimuth - 57.37 m, Kasjanow - 54.87 m - and especially Karpow - 49.93 m - lost a lot of ground here. After the penultimate exercise, Eaton was 155 P ahead of Hardee with 8148 points. Suárez actually took third place behind Hardee by 220 p. Warner was now 83 P behind him, followed by Van Alphen - 127 P on Suárez, Freimuth - 154 P and Kasjanow - 217 P. In the last discipline, Eaton could not be overtaken except in the case of a fall or an injury. The same was true of Hardee on the silver court. Only the battle for bronze was not yet decided. Suárez, Warner and Van Alphen were good 1,500-meter runners and had the best cards.
The fastest 1500 meter runner in the field was Van Alphen with 4: 22.50 min. Mayer came in 4: 23.02 minutes ahead of Coertzen in 4: 26.52 minutes, Warner in 4: 29.85 minutes and Suárez in 4: 30.08 minutes. Sintnicolaas followed with 4: 31.17 min. Then Eaton came with 4: 33.59 minutes, Kasyanow scored 4: 33.68 minutes behind. Freimuth crossed the finish line with 4: 37.62 min, Hardee with 4: 40.94 min. With that the decision was made. Ashton Eaton became Olympic champion with 8869 points, just 24 points short of the 2004 Olympic record set by Czech Roman Šebrle. Trey Hardee achieved 198 points behind Eaton silver, Leonel Suárez was a further 148 points behind bronze medalist. Fourth place went to Hans Van Alphen, 76 points behind the bronze medal. Damian Warner finished fifth, just another five points behind, who set a new personal best with his 8442 points. Rico Freimuth followed on the next places ahead of Oleksij Kasjanow and Sergei Swiridow.
Ashton Eaton won the thirteenth gold medal for the United States in the decathlon .
