Rugby Union World Cup 2007 / Qualification

For the final round of the Rugby Union World Cup 2007 , which was held in France in September and October , the eight participants in the quarter-finals of the 2003 World Cup were automatically eligible to start. Ten of the twelve other available places in the tournament were occupied by the winners of regional qualifying tournaments, two more in qualifying games ( barrage ).

The qualifying tournaments were divided into five continental groups. A total of 86 teams took part, 14 from Africa , 19 from America , 13 from Asia , 31 from Europe and 9 from Oceania .

Africa

Africa had a permanent starting place for the finals. In addition, there was the opportunity for a second team to qualify via a barrage. In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.

Round 1a

In two groups, three teams each played against each other once. The group winners played a playoff, the winner of which advanced to round 1b.

Namibia qualified as Africa 1 directly for the World Cup finals. Morocco advanced to the barrage round, playing as Africa 2 against Europe 4 . The winner of this game then played against America 4 for a place in the finals.

America

North and South America together had three fixed starting places available for the final round. In addition, there was the possibility for a fourth team to qualify via a barrage (against the winner of the game Africa 2 against Europe 4 ). In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.

Round 1a

In two groups, four teams from the Caribbean zone each played once against each other. The group winners played a playoff, the winner of which advanced to round 3b.

All games were originally supposed to take place in Colombo , but due to the uncertain political situation in Sri Lanka , they have been moved to Hong Kong. Japan qualified as Asia 1 directly for the World Cup finals. South Korea played as Asia 2 in a barrage against Oceania 3 for a place in the finals.

Europe

Europe had three fixed starting places available for the final round. In addition, there was the opportunity for a fourth team to qualify via a barrage. The results of the European Nations Cup 2004-2006 were also included in the World Cup qualification . In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.

Round 1

The eight teams of divisions 3B (excluding Hungary, relegated from 3A) and 3C (excluding Azerbaijan and Armenia) played a round in the knockout system for a place in round 2.
