The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the lack of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
For centuries, the place Saint-Clément served the exclusively agriculturally oriented and self- sufficient hamlets ( hameaux ) and individual farms in the area as a center of handicrafts, trade and services. Since the middle of the 20th century tourism has played a not insignificant role for the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
In the Middle Ages , Saint-Clément was part of the Vice-County Carlat ; next to it probably existed a priory of the Saint-Géraud abbey of Aurillac. In 1643, the French King Louis XIII. the Carladès to the county and gave it to the Monaco-based Grimaldi family as a fief; this administered it until the outbreak of the French Revolution .
Attractions
- The late Romanesque parish church of Saint-Férréol was possibly a priory church of the Abbey of Saint-Géraud of Aurillac. With the exception of the corner stones , the flat-closing apse , the nave and the bell gable ( clocher peigne ) are made of roughly hewn rubble stones . The broad west wall with the bell gable on top follows the style of other churches of Carladès (cf. Thérondels et al.). The Gothic south portal is a later addition; the vaults date from the 14th century. In 1757 the roof structure and the bell gable were renewed. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1990 .
- The Château de la Rocque and the associated hamlet ( hameau ) have now completely disappeared.
Personalities
Captain François de La Rocque (1885–1946) and his three sons are buried on the site of the family's former headquarters.
