Santenay is a French commune with 892 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located in the valley of the Dheune river , in the south of the Côte de Beaune and belongs to the Côte-d'Or department . Santenay has become known worldwide especially for its wines . The place has some medicinal springs, which is why Santenay is also famous as a medicinal bath. In Roman times the community was called Sentilliacum . It owes its name to one of its sources, the Santana. At the end of the 19th century there were still four wells, namely:

  • the Fontaine Salée (translated salty spring)
  • the Santana fountain,
  • the Carnot fountain and
  • the lithium fountain.

Today only the latter two are still in operation. The water contains a lot of lithium , which is known for its healing properties. As is often the case with medicinal baths, there is also a casino here.

Santenay is the southernmost commune in the department of Côte-d'Or.
