history
Surbourg has a share in the former Holy Forest and today's Haguenauer Forest. The oldest monastery in the Alsace region ( Surbourg Monastery ) is located in its area, on Surbourg parish . it was founded in the 6th century by Arbogast of Strasbourg . The Romanesque church of the later Benedictine monastery was preserved and now serves as a parish church. It is dedicated to John the Baptist , who is also depicted on the municipality's coat of arms (sometimes it is also referred to as St. Arbogast or St. Martin).
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Surbourg belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Weißenburg district in the Upper Alsace district .
