The inhabitants are called Ternantais .

Ternant is located about 60 kilometers east-southeast of La Rochelle in the Saintonge . Ternant is surrounded by the neighboring communities of La Vergne in the north, Saint-Jean-d'Angély in the east, Mazeray in the south and Voissay in the west.

The A10 autoroute runs through the municipality .
