action

Emmet is an ordinary, rule-breaking, perfectly average construction worker minifigure that is so average that no one looks at it.

After work, he meets a young female minifigure named Wyldstyle who does not obey the rules. Confused by this, Emmet falls into a deep hole and comes across a mysterious object, the piece of resistance .

Emmet wakes up in an interrogation room where he meets Bad Cop , an evil cop, and the other half Good Cop . Emmet suddenly has the piece of resistance on his back and is chained. This piece is prophesied to save the world.

Bad Cop orders the robot police to melt down Emmet. Emmet, who has no knowledge of the meaning of the stone, is saved by Wyldstyle. As it turns out, the President of Emmet's hometown, President Business , is actually the evil Lord Business , who builds a weapon out of the Kragle (a simple superglue ) so that the master builders can no longer build as they wish. The word comes from the brand name “Krazy Glue”, which is no longer completely visible on the tube.

On the run, Wyldstyle realizes that Emmet is not that special because he is more average than anyone else. According to the prophecy, the figure who discovers the stone of resistance is said to be the special one. Emmet and Wyldstyle end up in the Old West , where they meet Vitruvius , one of the oldest master builders. Since Emmet obviously has no talent, he too doubts Emmet's ability as a master builder.

Emmet, Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are followed and almost killed by Bad Cop, who works for President Business, and the robo-police. At the last second, Wyldstyle's friend Batman comes to their rescue. Together they flee to Cloud Cuckoo Land, the only place in the Lego universe where you can build as you wish. There Emmet and his comrades meet the 1980s astronaut Benny and the always positive-thinking unicorn kitty , who join Emmet's troop.

Bad Cop completely destroys Cloud Cuckoo Land, but Emmet and friends escape in a quickly built Bat submarine . But this is not very stable, so that it implodes and only the double-decker couch built by Emmet remains, an old senseless idea of his. The troops have hidden in the couch and thus escaped. The group is rescued from the sea by the disembodied pirate Eisenbart . Now you can see that a pointless idea leads to success because it was viewed as too pointless.

Emmet thinks up a plan how they can get into the business tower undetected. In the business tower, Wyldstyle admits that she would have liked to have been the special one and that her real name is actually Lucy. Emmet's plan goes wrong; Not only that, but Wyldstyle / Lucy, Batman, Benny and Unicorn-Kitty are caught, Vitruvius is personally murdered by the Lord and Emmet is strapped to a battery that is supposed to kill him too. To make matters worse, the Lord throws the stone of resistance into nowhere.

Emmet sacrifices himself for the team by jumping into nowhere himself with the battery. Bad Cop, who has since been abandoned by Lord Business, frees the master builders. Wyldstyle spreads the message to all residents of the Lego universe that they are going to take action against Lord Business by tearing down his structures and building new things out of the blocks.

Emmet now ends up in the real world and is found by boy Finn. Finn's father is a selfish and arrogant adult Lego fan who has built an extensive model world in the basement, in which the previous plot of the film took place. He gets jealous when he sees what his son did with his model system. That's why Finn's dad uses super glue to fix everything the way it was. Finn brings Emmet and the resistance stone, the glue cap, back to the Lego universe, where Lord Business has already started his evil plan. However, Emmet can convince Lord Business that Lego is only there to be creative. At the same time, Finn can do that to his father, who learns that he was Lord Business, having selfishly believed that Lego toys are only for adults. Lord Business even lays the stone of resistance on the Kragle that defuses it forever.

Finn's father is distributing cantilever dissolvers throughout the Lego universe to restore creativity. Emmet and Wyldstyle meet again, which leads to a kiss between the two. Finn's dad has had a big change of heart and even invites Finn's little sister to play with his Lego sets. The result: Aliens from the planet Duplon ( Lego Duplo ) threaten the Lego universe.

places

During the film, Emmet's troop always move to new places. These are usually identified by floating Lego bricks that form the name of the respective place. The locations in the film are:

  • Steinstadt : Emmet's hometown, a harmonious place where all residents of the city greet each other. However, the stone town is under the control of Lord Business, so the daily routine of each individual resident is regulated with instructions.
  • Old West ( English for The Wild West ): Time seems to have stood still in the Wild West. The residents, cowboys and Indians, are very brutal towards each other and often fight.
  • Middle Sea Country (originally Middle Zealand ): A medieval country. The name is a nod to Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings and the location of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films - New Zealand .
  • Wolkenkuckucksheim (in the original Cloud Cuckoo Land ): place in the clouds, only accessible through a rainbow and comparatively very colorful and happy. Home of unicorn kitty. But it is completely destroyed in the course of the film.
  • Eisenbart's ship : Eisenbart's ship , in which the troops find shelter. With the exception of the first floor of the Business Tower, it is the only place that is mobile.
  • Business Tower ( English for office tower ): Place where creativity is prohibited. The tower is named after its owner, Lord Business .
  • Real world / nothingness : place where Finn and his father live. Emmet gets there when he sacrifices himself for the troop. For Lego figures, the real world corresponds to heaven or the hereafter.
  • Planet Duplon : Place that, although not shown, is mentioned at the end of the film. The inhabitants of the planet are aliens, built from Lego Duplo bricks.

characters

  • Emmet : An ordinary minifigure, not a hero. In the beginning he is still scared and insecure, later he turns out to be a true hero. In the beginning he is not a master builder either, he only learns the skill when he makes direct contact with Finn.
  • Wyldstyle / Lucy : A free person, brave, tough, a little unkind. Although Emmet and Lucy have difficulty getting along at first, over time the two of them spark. Wyldstyle is the perfect master builder, and it is also mentioned in the film that she is an orphan. She's also initially Batman's girlfriend .
  • Vitruvius : A blind magician and one of the oldest known master builders. He shows a lot of confidence in Emmet, although like Wyldstyle, he doubts his abilities. He made up the prophecy himself. to intimidate Lord Business, but miraculously it came true! During the course of the film he is murdered by Business but returns as a ghost to teach Emmet the virtues of self-belief and self-conquest.
  • Batman / Bruce Wayne : Superhero who, as expected, likes to work alone. He is Wyldstyle's boyfriend but doesn't know that Wyldstyle is not her real name. Besides, Emmet is jealous of him.
  • Benny : An astronaut. He is very enthusiastic about the mission and is always in a good mood. His great love are spaceships.
  • Unicorn Kitty : Princess of Cloud Cuckoo Land and fusion of a unicorn and Nyan Cat . Unicorn kitty tries to always think positively.
  • Eisenbart : Pirate who lost his body in a battle against Lord Business. Since then he has strutted in a confused Bionicle body. At first he is suspicious of Emmet, but realizes that his naive and senseless ideas are the key to success.
  • Lord Business / President Business / The man from above : Perfectionist who always strictly follows instructions. If there are no instructions for something, he creates some himself with the help of his idea extractor. Through Emmet, he understands that his buildings inspire others, and he was also inspired by others. Thereupon he gives up his evil plans. His character is based on Finn's father.
  • Bad Cop / Good Cop : A cop with a double-headed print. One side is good, the other is bad. When Bad Cop's plans fail, he has tantrums and breaks things. Good Cop is destroyed by Lord Business so that Bad Cop will blindly follow his plans. When Business tries to let him die, he realizes that Good Cop still exists, so he draws a scribble face on the back of his head with a felt-tip pen to replace Good Cop.
  • Finn : A boy who actually created the entire story with his imagination. Emmet, Wyldstyle and everyone else are actually his work.
  • Superman : A very well known superhero and master builder. Green Lantern gets on his nerves regularly, which is why he wants to avoid him.
  • Green Lantern : A somewhat unknown superhero and master builder. He's the admirer and stalker of Superman and would like to be friends with him.
  • Wonder Woman : A superhero and master builder. She flies an invisible jet and is the clever mind of the master builders.
  • Gandalf and Dumbledore : Two wizards and master builders, Gandalf comes from Lord of the Rings , Dumbledore from Harry Potter . Vitruvius has similarities with both and cannot tell them apart.
  • Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and Lando Calrissian : a group of Star Wars characters who happened to pass Eisenbart's ship and had a hyperdrive that the troops needed. Batman joined them, but was able to steal their drive unnoticed. When trying to get into hyperspace and thus escape an Exogorth, they noticed the lack of drive and are devoured by the Exogorth. This is a parody of the original scene in The Empire Strikes Back .
  • The Micro Managers : Micro Managers are malicious, pitch black, cube-shaped robots that work for Lord Business. They are programmed to destroy anything that was not built according to instructions. They are very difficult to defeat; Emmet and his companions can only tear them apart with special powers. After Emmet Lord Business voted, all micro managers shut down, so the victory belongs to Emmet.
  • Robo-Police : Humanoid robots that work for Bad Cop are the most common opponents in the movie. They have an almost human programming, but are there to arrest master builders. They contrast with the stubborn Micro Managers and are very easy to defeat.
  • The aliens from the planet Duplo: These aliens are from the planet Duplo, are a reference to Lego Duplo and appear at the end of the film.

production

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller ( Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ) were hired in June 2010 to write the script and direct the film. In November 2011, it was reported that Warner Bros. had given the film the go-ahead. The Australian studio Animal Logic took care of the animation.

Only buildings that can be recreated with Lego were used for the film, over three million animated bricks and 180 minifigures appear. On purpose, the characters don't move smoothly, but rather abruptly and sometimes in the way we know it from private brick films . In general, the film is strongly oriented towards the visual aesthetics and style of brick films. Many brick film and Lego fans praised the clear references to their own production aesthetics and welcomed the richness of detail and the care of the production. For example, in some scenes Vitruvius' ghost is lowered into the picture by a thread, a trick that was often used in early brick films.

Also clearly visible in some scenes is the superglue on Emmet's back, the damage to Benny's helmet, or fingerprints on various figures. It's just not supposed to be perfect, the facial expressions were added late in the film, which you can see very clearly when Emmet returns from reality.

The film contains a dedication for Kathleen Fleming, a former Lego product designer.

synchronization

The synchronization was commissioned by FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH . Alexander Löwe was responsible for the dialogue book , Benedikt Rabanus for the dialogue direction. Christine Roche was responsible for the lyrics, Thomas Amper for the musical direction.

reception

Grossing results

On the opening weekend in the United States, the film grossed $ 69.1 million. After The Passion of the Christ ($ 83.8 million), it is the second-best premiere to date in the generally rather low-revenue month of February. Worldwide it took in over $ 468 million.

Reviews

The reviews have been mostly positive. The old conflict topic is dealt with: building according to instructions versus building what you like . In the end, creativity wins. It is also noticeable that the superheroes Batman, Green Lantern and Superman are parodied and are inferior to the simple Emmet.

However, criticism came from the US television channel Fox Business , as the film conveyed to the children that large corporations are bad; in addition, Lord Business has a strong resemblance to the Republican politician Mitt Romney .

  • All the characters in the film correspond to real LEGO minifigures. For example, Emmet is based on the classic construction workers; Wyldstyle is reminiscent of a female skater, Vitruvius is strongly reminiscent of Gandalf and Dumbledore (who both also appear in the film), but the name is based on Vitruvius , a Roman architect. Benny is a parody of the classic old-time astronauts.
  • Phil Lord and Chris Miller appear as Lego figures themselves in the film.

Spin-offs & continuation
