Alfred is a male given name of Old High German origin.

Origin and meaning

The name originally goes back to the old German name Alfrad . This consists of the two Old High German words alb for “nature spirit” and rad for “counselor”. The English version of this name, Alfred , became increasingly popular on the British island in the 9th century , partly because of Alfred the Great . The English version later found its way into German.

The name Alfred was a popular first name in Germany at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. It was among the top ten most popular boy names in a year in the 1910s. Its popularity declined sharply in the 1950s, and it has hardly been used since the early 1970s.
