David Jenkins (athlete)
David Jenkins ( David Andrew Jenkins ; born May 25, 1952 in Pointe-à-Pierre , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a former British sprinter who mainly competed in the 400-meter run . Jenkins was later convicted of drug offenses.
Athletic career
Jenkins attended the Edinburgh Academy . In 1971, at the age of 19, he won the European Championships in Helsinki over 400 meters and was fifth in the 4 x 400 meter relay . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he won the silver medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay together with Martin Reynolds , Alan Pascoe and David Hemery and reached the semifinals over 400 meters .
At the 1973 Universiade , he won bronze over 400 meters. In 1974 he was starting seventh over 200 meters for Scotland at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch , fourth over 400 meters and fifth in the 4-by-100-meter relay . At the European Championships in Rome he took over 400 meters silver behind Karl Honz and won the 4 x 400 meter relay together with Glen Cohen , Bill Hartley and Alan Pascoe before the relay from the Federal Republic of Germany.
At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he was seventh over 400 meters and failed in the run-up to the 4-by-400-meter relay .
In the following year he was runner- up in the Athletics World Cup in Düsseldorf in 1977 in the European 4 x 400 meter relay.
In 1978 he won the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton with the Scottish 4-by-100-meter relay and was sixth with the Scottish 4-by-400-meter relay. Over 400 meters he was eliminated in the semifinals. At the European Championships in Prague he reached the semi-finals over 200 meters and did not get past the first round with the British 4 x 400 meter relay.
At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he was again seventh over 400 meters .
At the European Championships in Athens in 1982 , he won silver with the British 4 x 400 meter relay and was eliminated over 400 m in the semi-finals.
Over 400 m he was six times in a row English champion from 1971 to 1976, 1975 US champion and 1980 British champion. He was three times Scottish champion over 200 meters (1970, 1971, 1973), twice over 400 meters (1971, 1973) and once over 100 meters (1972).
Jenkins later admitted to taking performance-enhancing substances during his running career.
Trafficking in doping substances
In the 1980s, Jenkins and Juan Javier Macklis founded a company in Mexico for the production of anabolic steroids intended for the US market. He was then arrested by police, found guilty of approximately $ 100 million worth of drug smuggling by a US court in December 1988 and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was released after serving nine months of his sentence at the Mojave Desert Jail . In 1993 he founded a company for the production of dietary supplements with Dan Duchaine , a well-known guru in the steroid scene. After Duchaine's death, Jenkins continued to run Next Nutrition on his own.
