Detective Conan ( Japanese 名 探 偵 コ ナ ン , Meitantei Konan , "Master Detective Conan") is an internationally successful manga series by the Japanese illustrator Gosho Aoyama that has been running since 1994 . The plot revolves around the 16-year-old (17-year-old in the anime) high school student and hobby detective Shin'ichi Kudō, whose body takes on the shape of a primary school student through a poison. He then finds accommodation with the private detective Kogorō Mōri and secretly solves his cases. The Shōnen series, which can be classified into the genres of crime and comedy , was implemented as an anime series , real-life film , film series and in video games , among other things .
action
Detective Conan tells in loosely connected short stories the adventures of the young high school student, successful and brilliant amateur detective Shin'ichi Kudō , who is put down by two men in black after solving a murder case. You give him a case containing the cytotoxin Apoptoxin 4869, which is to kill him. Instead, however, it rejuvenates his body by around ten years.
Its size and strength, but not his intelligence and his perspicacity, deprived themselves Shin'ichi turns to his friend and neighbor Dr. Agasa who stands him in difficult times and contribute to providing it in the course of the series with new gadgets powered such as a voice transponder disguised as a fly , with which he can imitate other people's voices in a deceptively realistic manner.
When Shin'ichi's sandpit friend Ran Mōri visits the professor in search of him, she immediately notices the little, unknown boy. So that Ran does not recognize that the little one Shin'ichi looks astonishingly similar as a child, he takes his father's glasses to temporarily camouflage himself. In order to keep his true identity a secret, Shin'ichi is forced to spontaneously think of a new name. When seeing two crime novels , he calls himself Conan Edogawa - after the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle and the Japanese crime writer Rampo Edogawa . Ran, who gradually noticed a resemblance to her missing boyfriend, explained that he was a distant relative of Shin'ichi and had spent a lot of time with him in the past.
Conan moves in with Ran and her father, the unsuccessful private detective Kogorō Mōri , in the hope of getting more information about the "Men in Black", their organization and the poison. His goal is to smash the organization and achieve old greatness through an antidote. From now on, he tries to unobtrusively support Mōri in solving his cases - or, best of all, to solve the puzzles himself, but without revealing his true identity.
However, this is usually more difficult than it might appear at first glance. Often he has to lie to Ran, who now and then becomes suspicious, in order to keep his secret and to protect both herself and herself from the organization. However, since both are in love with each other and Ran sorely misses him, it is not always easy for him to keep his true identity a secret from her. In addition, he now has to behave like a small child according to his external age and, to his chagrin, go to Japanese elementary school again. There he involuntarily founds the Detective Boys with his classmates Ayumi Yoshida , Genta Kojima and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya , with whom he often solves tricky cases, where mostly only he combines meaningfully.
In the course of the plot, Conan gets help from Shiho Miyano , known as Sherry , who developed the poison and who refused to work in the organization after the murder of her sister. To avoid punishment, she took her own poison in an attempt to kill herself, but was amazed to find that it shrank, rather than killing her. Since then she has lived with Professor Agasa under the name Ai Haibara , attends Conan's class and becomes a member of the Detective Boys .
The student detective Heiji Hattori from Osaka also discovers Shin'ichi's secret, but keeps it to himself, as both become good friends. Furthermore, Shin'ichi's parents, Yūsaku and Yukiko Kudō , also know of his new identity. Both live in Los Angeles and want to persuade their son to come to the United States with them and leave the organization to the police. Shin'ichi refuses, however, because he wants to solve this case himself and stay with Ran.
Over time, Conan gradually succeeds in uncovering some of the organization's secrets, but the big blow against them is still denied him. To this end, he made the acquaintance of representatives of the FBI and the CIA , who are also investigating the organization.
At certain times, however, Conan manages to transform himself back into Shin'ichi for a short time through prototypes of the antidote, almost always with Ai's help or only by chance. Most of the time, this is done to dispel Ran's suspicions or involuntarily solve a case.
A large part of the action takes place in the fictional district "Beika chō " ( 米 花 町 , べ い か ち ょ う , based on Baker Street , where Sherlock Holmes lives) in Tokyo , the capital of Japan. However, it is often relocated to Osaka , Hokkaidō or other prefectures in Japan as part of various excursions, events or vacations . Cases have also occurred in a wide variety of modes of transport such as ships, airplanes or the Shinkansen . The action has already played twice outside of Japan, once in New York (Volume 35) and once in London (Volume 71/72).
characters
- Shin'ichi Kudō aka Conan Edogawa
- The 16-year-old high school student Shin'ichi Kudō ( 工藤 新 一 ) is seen as the savior of the Japanese police . His greatest role model is Sherlock Holmes ; he is also an excellent football player. He is the son of Yūsaku Kudō ( 工藤 優 作 ), a famous crime writer and hobby detective, and Yukiko Kudō ( 工藤 有 希 子 ), a former actress . After he was rejuvenated by a poison from the black organization, he lives under the name Conan Edogawa ( 江 戸 川 コ ナ ン ) with his sandpit friend Ran Mōri and her father Kogorō Mōri . Shin'ichi is in love with Ran. With his "anesthesia chronometer", one of Professor Agasa's inventions, he mostly anesthetizes Kogorō and mimics his voice with the help of the "voice transposer" - so he can solve cases even undetected. He lets his friends and acquaintances, who know nothing of his true identity, believe that he has an important case to solve somewhere outside of Tokyo. Since then, he has been considered deceased by the organization. Shin'ichi's name has not appeared in the press or public since he was rejuvenated. For the people of Japan he is considered to have disappeared or died. Shin'ichi's name means “one truth” in Japanese, and accordingly his motto is: “There is always only one truth”.
- Ran Mōri
- Ran Mōri ( 毛利 蘭 ) is Shin'ichi's sandpit friend. As the captain of the karate team in her neighborhood, she is known for her clout. She can be quick-tempered at times, but she has a cheerful personality and is always concerned about others; sometimes she even forgets herself. She lives with her father Kogorō and tries again and again to persuade her separated mother Eri Kisaki to return to her father. She is secretly in love with Shin'ichi, which she never openly admits to him. Conan treats her like a little brother, but she subconsciously seems to suspect that Conan is Shin'ichi.
- Kogorō Mōri
- Kogorō Mōri ( 毛利 小五郎 ) is the father of Ran Mōri. The 38-year-old doesn't like Conan, hits him regularly and often tries to scold him. However, he is also ready to investigate a case with him. He used to be a criminal investigator, but was dismissed from service because of a serious mistake; his wife Eri left him a short time later. Since then, Kogorō has determined more badly than right as a private investigator. But when Conan appears, he is known as The Sleeping Kogorō or The Detective who solves his cases in his sleep , since Conan almost stuns him and solves the cases in Kogorō's name with the voice transposer. He gets drunk frequently and is a huge fan of J-pop singer and actress Yōko Okino . However, Kogorō does indeed have hidden criminalistic skills with which he can solve cases even without Conan's “help” - but only if a case affects him personally.
- Professor Hiroshi Agasa
- Professor Hiroshi Agasa ( 阿 笠 博士 ) is 52 years old, lives next to the Kudōs villa and has always been close friends with Shin'ichi and his family. His inventions prove very useful to Conan. Agasa provides Conan with the voice transposer and the anesthetic chronometer , which Conan uses most often to solve cases.
- Shiho Miyano aka Ai Haibara
- The 18-year-old Shiho Miyano ( 宮 野 志 保 ) was a member of the Black Organization and known by the code name Sherry . Her parents were already members of the organization and started developing the poison APTX 4869 (Apoptoxin 4869). Because her parents died, the organization sent her to America for training. Shiho and her sister Akemi wanted to leave the organization, but Gin murdered Akemi and Shiho was captured by the organization. To avoid the organization's punishment, she attempted to take her own life using the poison she developed herself. However, like Shin'ichi, she turned back into a child, was able to escape and from then on lives with Professor Agasa. Shiho supports Conan under the name Ai Haibara ( 灰 原 哀 ) and is a member of the "Detective Boys". She has evidently developed tender feelings for Conan / Shin'ichi, but because of her distant nature and because Ran is close to him, she refrains from admitting her feelings openly to him.
- The Detective Boys
- A group of Conan's and Ai's class, who have made themselves detectives and since then have got into some dangerous cases and solve them with brilliance - mostly through Conan. Besides Conan and Ai, its members are:
- Ayumi Yoshida ( 吉田 歩 美 ): A young, very happy girl. Though naive and very scary, her unwavering optimism makes her an irreplaceable member of the group. She is openly in love with Conan, which her male comrades don't like that much.
- Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya ( 円 谷 光彦 ): After Conan and Ai, the most intelligent and educated of the Detective Boys because he comes from a family of teachers. He is initially in love with Ayumi, but gradually he also develops deeper feelings for Ai.
- Genta Kojima ( 小 嶋 元 太 ): A plump, strong boy and the self-proclaimed leader of the Detective Boys. Although he is quite cocky and tends to use his muscles rather than his head, he is nonetheless a loyal and reliable comrade. He is also in love with Ayumi. He also shows a pronounced preference for the dish " Unagi Meshi " ( 鰻 飯 , kana . う な ぎ め し , fried eel on rice).
- Heiji Hattori
- Just like Shin'ichi, Heiji Hattori ( 服 部 平 次 ) , who is of the same age, is an extremely successful detective from Osaka . The second time they meet, he finds out that Conan is Shin'ichi; but he keeps this to himself. Since then they have been best friends and solve many cases together. Heiji's father is the chief of police in Osaka. Heiji usually turns up with his childhood friend Kazuha , who accompanies him on almost all of his trips and with whom he is secretly in love. Heiji is the number 2 kendo fighter in the region. Heiji's special characteristics are his baseball cap, his dark skin color and his strongly pronounced Kansai dialect, which often makes it difficult for Heiji to proceed in disguise.
- Kazuha Toyama
- Kazuha Toyama ( 遠山 和 葉 ) is Heiji's sandpit friend and later also a good friend of Ran, after initially mistaking her for a rival. Her father is the chief inspector in Osaka and works with Heiji's father. Both families are good friends. Like Heiji, Kazuha also masters a martial art, she has the 3rd Dan in Aikidō . Kazuha has been secretly in love with Heiji since childhood, but fails to tell him so.
- Sonoko Suzuki
- Sonoko Suzuki ( 鈴木 園子 ), Ran's best friend, is the youngest daughter of a wealthy industrial family who takes advantage of every opportunity to raise Ran over her faltering relationship with Shin'ichi. She, on the other hand, raves about two possible admirers: Kaitō Kid and Makoto Kyōgoku ( 京 極 真 ), a karate school champion who has a lot for Sonoko himself. She has an older sister named Ayako.
- Masumi Sera
- Masumi Sera ( 世 良 真 純 ) is a boyish school detective who becomes Ran's and Sonoko's new classmate after a stay in America. Masumi met Shin'ichi / Conan and Ran ten years earlier as children when they and their families were involved in a criminal case, and since that encounter she has admired Shin'ichi immensely. She shows an extraordinary interest in Conan and tries everything to get close to him; and it is implied that she is fully aware of Conan's secret. She is also the younger sister of Shuichi Akai and Shukichi Haneda ( see below ).
- Mary
- A mysterious girl ( メ ア リ ー ) who lives with Masumi. In the course of the plot, she turns out to be the mother of Masumi, Shuichi and Shukichi, who, like Conan and Ai, was probably transformed back into a child-like form by the APTX 4869.
- Japanese police
- In the course of the series, Conan and Co. stumble across various police cases and then work with the officers to solve them. The first crime department in Tokyo, which Megure and his subordinates belong to, worked closely with Shin'ichi even before the series began; a collaboration that continues to be practiced with Shin'ichi's alter ego Conan.
- Jūzō Megure : Jūzō Megure ( 目 暮 十三 ) is a commissioner of the Japanese police . Before Kogorōs dismissal he was his superior. Now it is mainly up to him to solve his cases together with Kogorō's supposed help. His trademark is the slouch hat, with which he tries to cover up a scar from an early case in which he met his future wife Midori. Subordinate to him are the inspectors Wataru Takagi and Miwako Satō .
- Miwako Satō : Inspector Miwako Satō ( 佐藤 美 和 子 ) is an officer of the Japanese police who is venerated by almost all colleagues in the department. She is the only one who receives Conan's supposedly unintentional ideas with joy. When she was in elementary school, her father died in a car accident while doing his duty, which led her to become a police officer. Due to the tragic death of her colleague Jinpei Matsuda, she finds it difficult at first to reveal her true feelings for her colleague Wataru Takagi; however, both later become a stable couple.
- Wataru Takagi : Wataru Takagi ( 高木 渉 ) is also an inspector for the Japanese police and acts as the right-hand man of Commissioner Megure. Shy and clumsy, he has promising tendencies and trusts Conan's abilities. In addition, he is the only criminalist who suspects Conan is someone else. He is in love with his colleague Satō from the start, but only after a lot of obstacles do the two finally come together.
- Ninzaburō Shiratori : Ninzaburō Shiratori ( 白鳥 任三郎 ) is just like Satō and Takagi an officer of the Japanese police and comes from a wealthy family. He is often very vain and cocky and finds Conan's behavior very strange at times. In his childhood Shiratori met a girl whom he fell in love with and who later believed to have recognized her as Sato; he later finds his true love in Sumiko Kobayashi ( 小林 澄 子 ), the class teacher of the Detective Boys.
- Yumi Miyamoto : Yumi Miyamoto ( 宮本 由 美 ), a traffic policeman and inspector of Sato's teasing best friend, who insists on giving the burgeoning relationship between Sato and Takagi a little "nudge". She herself has an occasional relationship with Shukichi Haneda ( 羽 田 秀吉 ), one of the most brilliant Shogi masters in Japan.
- Kazunobu Chiba : Kazunobu Chiba ( 千葉 和 伸 ) is an inspector with the Tokyo Police Department. The corpulent policeman is - next to Takagi, with whom he is very good friends - Megure's second right-hand man when investigating the case.
- Naeko Miike : Naeko Miike ( 三 池 苗子 ) is a traffic policeman and has known Chiba since elementary school. Chiba only realizes later that it is his childhood sweetheart. She seems to have feelings for him too.
- Misao Yamamura : Misao Yamamura ( 山村 ミ サ オ ) is a stupid inspector, later commissioner, of Gunma Prefecture. He is a big fan of Yukiko Kudō and Kogorō Mori's "detective" achievements. Often he himself becomes a victim of Conan's anesthesia chronometer and thus unintentionally gains a high reputation himself.
- Sango and Jūgo Yokomizo : Sango Yokomizo ( 横 溝 参悟 ) and Jūgo Yokomizo ( 横 溝 重 悟 ) are twin brothers. While Sango works as a commissioner in Shizuoka Prefecture and appreciates Kogorō's help, Jūgo, who works as a commissioner in Kanagawa Prefecture, believes the involvement of a detective is superfluous.
- Kaitō Kuroba alias Kaitō Kid / Master Thief 1412
- Kaitō Kuroba ( 黒 羽 快 斗 ) or Kaitō Kid ( 怪 盗 キ ッ ド ), as he calls himself, is a professional thief and an opponent of Shin'ichi. He is able to take on the appearance of any person through disguise and very closely mimick his victims (even their voices). He is often in dispute with Jirokichi Suzuki (鈴木 次郎 吉), the general advisor of the Suzuki group and the commissioner Ginzo Nakamori ( 中 森 銀 三 ). No one is harmed or killed in his thefts. A few attempts at theft were thwarted by Conan, but he never succeeded in catching Kid. In some cases, Kid also acts as Conan's ally at times, although he cannot let go of his mischievous nature.
Kaitō Kid is the main character of another work by Aoyama, Kaito Kid . He is the successor to his father Toichi Kuroba, the original Kaitō Kid, who was also a friendly rival of Shin'ichi's father Yusaku and also the teacher of Shin'ichi's mother Yukiko in the arts of disguise, but was killed in a fake stage accident under as yet unexplained circumstances Life has come. Kids profile was created based on the model of Arsene Lupine . - Eri Kisaki
- Eri Kisaki ( 妃 英 理 ), Ran's mother, is a celebrated (and feared) lawyer. She has been separated from her husband Kogorō for ten years, but still has feelings for him (as he does for her); However, it is only because of their mutual stubbornness that they have not yet found each other again. She is also a childhood friend of Yukiko Kudōs, both of whom were previously referred to as the "princess" (Yukiko) and "queen" (Eri) of the Teitan High School.
- The black organization
- During the series, Shin'ichi repeatedly encounters the black organization he calls "Men in Black". Among other things, she developed the apoptoxin 4869 (APTX 4869) and instilled this Shin'ichi. All high-ranking members of the organization bear the aliases of alcoholic beverages. One of the main projects of the organization appears to be research into a means of immortality (at least agelessness) and the control of biological life. According to various indications, the APTX 4869 was designed for this purpose, and there is also evidence that at least one member, Vermouth, is ageless. The head of the organization is Anokata ( あ の 方 , German "this person"), whose true identity was until December 13, 2017 as one of the greatest mysteries. Since then, through the personal testimony of the author Aoyama in the form of the publication of Chapter 1008, it is known that Anokata bears the real name Renya Karasuma ( 烏丸 蓮 耶
Karasuma Renya ).
- Gin : A high-ranking and perhaps the organization's most bloodthirsty killer. He is responsible for ensuring that Shin'ichi was given the APTX. His ingenuity and cold bloodedness make him a very dangerous opponent, and for reasons still unknown he has a particular interest in the death of Sherry (Ai Haibara).
- Vodka : Gin's partner. Somewhat more balanced than this, vodka is the easiest to be fooled by either of them. Vodka is mostly responsible for the business affairs of the organization.
- Vermouth / Chris Vineyard / Sharon Vineyard : A famous American actress, code-named Vermouth, a senior member of the Black Organization. Allegedly the daughter of the late actress Sharon Vineyard , "mother" and "daughter" are really one and the same person. Sharon is friends with Shin'ichi's mother and, like her, a brilliant disguise artist. She is considered the darling of the boss Anokata. Despite her work at the organization, she has scruples about eliminating people who matter to her (like Shin'ichi / Conan and Ran who once saved her life), and she even hopes that Shin'ichi will be her as Shūichi Akai as Silver Bullet referred, manages to make the organization ultimately harmless.
- Akemi Miyano : Akemi Miyano ( 宮 野 明 美 ) was a low-ranking member of the organization and Shiho Miyano's older sister. She was murdered by gin and vodka while trying to buy her sister out of the organization. However, her death has long-lasting consequences for Conan and Shiho in the course of the series.
- Chianti and Korn : the organization's two best snipers. However, both harbor a hatred of vermouth as they blame them for the death of a colleague.
- Elena and Atsushi Miyano : Elena Miyano ( 宮 野 エ レ ナ ) and Atsushi Miyano ( 宮 野 厚 司 ), the parents of Akemi and Shiho, were both scientists at the organization and started developing the APTX. Both died early in a failed experiment, which is why Shiho was raised by her older sister. Both of them always had the wish that one day both daughters could lead a normal life. Elena Miyano's code name was Hell Angel (approximately: Angel of Hell) and is known to be British.
- Pisco : Kenzo Masuyama's (枡 山 憲 三 ) code name is Pisco and he is given the task of murdering the politician Shigehiko Namiguchi. Before he can kill Ai, Gin kills him because Pisco's actions endangered the organization during a liquidation order. Irish (perpetrator in the 13th Conan film) adored Pisco very much.
- Calvados : He was another sniper for the organization. Arrived in Japan, he is supposed to kill Ai Haibara in collaboration with Vermouth. But with the intervention of the FBI and Ran Moris, this fails. He is incapacitated by Shuichi Akai and robbed of his weapons. But Calvados can kill himself with a hidden weapon.
- FBI and CIA
- During his investigation into the Black Organization, Conan encounters various members of the American federal authorities who are also after the organization. Its main members include:
- Shūichi Akai : Shūichi Akai ( 赤 井 秀 一 ) is one of the best agents on James Black's team. He has a personal vendetta against gin for the death of Akemi Miyano, with whom he fell in love. In order to mislead the organization, he fakes his death with the help of Conan and Rena Mizunashi and supports Conan in his new identity as an engineering student Subaru Okiya ( 沖 矢 昴 ). He is also the older brother of Shukichi Haneda and Masumi Sera.
- Jodie Starling / Jodie Saintemillion : An FBI agent with a personal vendetta against Vermouth who murdered her parents several years ago. She is Shin'ichi / Conan's main liaison with the FBI, and she's also been Ran's and Sonoko's English teacher for a while. Also, Jodie was with her colleague Shuichi Akai until he fell in love with Akemi Miyano - who was murdered by gin - and left her. She still has feelings for him and often calls him "Shu". It was named after Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs and the actress Jodie Foster , who played Starling in the film adaptation of the thriller.
- James Black : The head of the FBI's action against the organization in Japan. He is of British descent.
- Kir / Rena Mizunashi ( 水 無 怜 奈 ) / Hidemi Hondō ( 本 堂 瑛 海 ): A young CIA agent who was able to sneak into the organization through her father's sacrifice and from then on provides the FBI and the CIA with inside information. In order to regain the trust that the organization had lost in the meantime for this project, it - at least officially - shoots Shūichi Akai, what the organization considers to be the most dangerous opponent. She has a brother named Eisuke Hondō ( 本 堂 瑛 祐 ), who briefly became Ran's classmate while looking for his sister Hidemi and even discovered Conan's secret.
- Andre Camel : A menacing-looking but loyal FBI agent who has worked with James Black and Jodie Starling on a regular basis since Rena Mizunashi was smacked back into the Black Organization.
- Japanese security police
- In the course of the series it is revealed that the Japanese security police have also become aware of the black organization and have smuggled their own spies there independently of the FBI and CIA.
- Rei Furuya : Rei Furuya ( 降 谷 零 ), a young officer from the National Police Public Security Bureau who sneaked into the Black Organization under the alias Bourbon . He has a deep hatred of Shuichi Akai, whom he blames for the death of a friend and colleague serving the organization. In everyday life he works under the alias Tōru Amuro ( 安室 透 ) in Café Poirot, which is located directly below Kogorō Mori's detective agency, and accompanies Kogorō as his "apprentice" at every opportunity.

The detective Conan Short Stories were published in individual chapters in the monthly manga magazine Manga Twister until it was discontinued and also appear as anthologies, of which 18 have been published so far. In addition to the manga, a 512-page volume with all chapters in which the organization plays a role was published on June 18, 2009. The first German 336-page special volume Detective Conan vs. Kaito Kid appeared. A further eight special volumes were subsequently published in German-speaking countries. In March 2016 and September 2016, two special volumes on Shinichi Kudo were published , which are exclusively available in this form in German-speaking countries and are not based on any Japanese origin. Ai Haibara won an online vote for a special volume in November 2016. By early 2015, over two million volumes had been sold in Germany alone.
The manga series has been published in Taiwan ( Chinese chines 偵探 柯南 , Pinyin Míngzhēntàn Kēnán ), since 1996 in Hong Kong ( 名 偵探 柯南 , Jyutping Ming 4 zing 1 taam 3 O 1 naam 4 ) and in South Korea ( 명탐정 코난 , Myŏngt 'amjŏng K'onan ), since 1997 in France ( Détective Conan ) and Spain ( Detective Conan ) , since 1998 in Italy ( Detective Conan ) , since 2001 in German-speaking countries (Detective Conan) , since 2002 in the People's Republic of China ( 名 侦探柯南 , Míngzhēntàn Kēnán ), since 2004 in the USA ( Case Closed ) , in Thailand ( ยอด นักสืบ จิ๋ว โค นั น , Yəd-Nagksüüb-Djiu Khoonan ), Sweden ( master detectives Conan ) , in Vietnam ( Thám tử lừng danh Conan ) and in Finland ( Salapoliisi Conan) . Anime
Television series
TMS Entertainment is producing an anime series based on the manga , directed by Kenji Kodama and Yasuichiro Yamamoto. The character design was created by Masatomo Sudō and the artistic direction was taken over by Yukihiro Shibutani. The series has been shown every Monday at 7 p.m. on Japanese TV channels Yomiuri TV and Nippon TV since January 8, 1996 . To mark the 15th anniversary of the series, the broadcasters moved the show to Saturday. The series consists mainly of episodes directly derived from the manga series. However, in order to compensate for time gaps between the productions of the individual episodes, episodes are also included in the series, the plot of which is fictitious and not directly related to the manga series. The opening credits of the series and the credits in the Japanese original version contained the text of the theme song as a subtitle in addition to the titles of the production team .
The anime is shown in South Korea , Taiwan , France , Italy , Spain , the United Arab Emirates and Chile , among others . In the United States and Canada , the series was broadcast in 2003 and 2004 under the name Case Closed ; however, the responsible studio, Funimation Entertainment, used to Anglicize the names of most of the main characters (i.e. in English names - e.g. Shini'chi Kudō in Jimmy Kudo - to change), which aroused some criticism. The broadcast by Funimation was stopped due to poor ratings after about 130 episodes and the first six films.
In Singapore , Malaysia , Thailand , Indonesia , Vietnam , Laos , the Philippines and other Asian countries, the program is broadcast as Detective Conan , in a separate version of the station Animax .
In Germany, the television series began broadcasting on April 10, 2002 on the private broadcaster RTL II . There, 333 German episodes, divided into four seasons, were first broadcast. This corresponds to 308 of the Japanese episodes, as specials were broadcast as a multi-part. The last new German-language episode on RTL II ran on July 3, 2006. From January 3 to February 7, 2011, the first 13 movies - divided into two parts - were broadcast.
The version of the anime shown in Germany was subsequently edited by the broadcasting television broadcaster RTL II, despite an FSK rating of 6 and over for youth protection. In another broadcast of the series from May 14 to 23, 2008, RTL II shortened the opening credits by around 40 seconds. From May 26, 2008, the intro was broadcast in full again. In the German version, in contrast to the American version, the original Japanese names are used.
From March 2005 to April 2006, 39 episodes of the television series appeared in Germany on m4e in three DVD boxes with a total of nine volumes.
From December 5, 2011 to February 12, 2014 VIVA detective Conan repeated several times in double episodes.
The series has been broadcast on ProSieben Maxx since November 2, 2016 . All 333 available episodes were shown after the first 111 episodes had been announced at the beginning. In June 2018 it was announced that new episodes were dubbed in German. From October 19, 2018 to March 13, 2019, 100 new episodes were first broadcast on weekdays on ProSieben Maxx.
Since March 2017, the anime and manga publisher Kazé Deutschland has been publishing all episodes previously broadcast in Germany on DVD. Most of the episodes republished by Kazé were rated by the FSK with a rating of 12 and over.

Special offers
In Japan there are so-called "special episodes" at irregular intervals as part of the television series, which usually last an hour, and for New Year's specials even two hours.
These specials have been converted into multi-part broadcasts for international and German broadcasting, as is common practice outside of Japan. However, since the specials often cannot be exactly distributed over several normal episodes, TMS has made cuts to adjust the duration. As a result, epilogues or parts of the plot are missing in some specials. For example, the perpetrator's motives remain uncertain in the episode A City Hostage .
On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of Nippon TV and the 50th anniversary of Yomiuri TV, the crossover special Lupine San-sei VS Meitantei Conan ( ル パ ン 三世 VS 名 探 偵 コ ナ ン , Rupan San-sei VS Meitantei Konan ; English subtitle: Lupine the 3rd VS Detective Conan ) aired. A continuation of this crossover between these two titles was released in Japan on December 7, 2013 under the title Lupine III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie ( ル パ ン 三世 VS 名 探 偵 コ ナ ン The Movie; Rupan Sansei Vāsasu Meitantei Konan The Movie) aired as a feature film. A German-language synchronization of the film was released on August 27, 2019 under the title Lupine III. vs. Detective Conan: The Movie by Kazé Anime has been shown in around 200 German and Austrian cinemas.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the detective Conan manga, the special The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa - The Two Worst Days of His Life ( 江 戸 川 コ ナ ン 失踪 事件 ~ 史上 最 悪 の 一日 ~ , Edogawa Konan Shissō Jiken ~ Shijō Saiaku no Tsuitachi ~ ) in Japan. In Germany, the Kazé special was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 3, 2017 , while the first broadcast took place on January 1, 2019 on ProSieben Maxx .
For the 20th anniversary of the anime, the special episode ONE - The Shrunken Master Detective ( エ ピ ソ ー ド “ONE” 小 さ く な っ た 名 探 偵 , Episōdo “ONE” Chīsaku Natta na Tantei ) was broadcast in Japan on December 9, 2016 . The special was also released on DVD and Blu-ray by Kazé on July 27, 2018 and first broadcast on ProSieben Maxx on October 19, 2018.
OVA
To date, twelve OVA episodes have been published in Japan . There are also five Side Story OVAs, so-called Magic Files , which appeared on VHS and DVD or on DVD and Blu-ray in parallel to the last cinema films . They complement the events of the respective film or tell a pre- or post-story. Since 2013 the Magic Files are no longer published on data carriers, but are broadcast as part of the regular anime. In addition, there are two mini-specials of seven minutes each, which were enclosed with two DVDs about short stories by Gosho Aoyama.
cinemamovies
Since 1997, a new detective Conan anime movie has been released in Japan every April, which is not part of the canon .
The eleventh film Konpeki no Jorī Rojā ( 紺 碧 の 棺 , German title: Die Azure Piratenflagge ), which grossed around 23.7 million dollars, was the third most successful anime film of 2007. The 13th film Shikkoku no Cheisā ( 漆 黒 の 追 跡者 , German title: Der Nachtschwarze Jäger ) grossed 3.5 billion yen, the 16th film Jūichininme no Sutoraikā (11 人 目 の ス ト ラ イ カ ー , German title: Der 11. Stürmer ) 3.29 billion yen (33.2 million $ ) and the 17th Zekkai no Puraibēto Ai ( 絶 海 の 探 偵 , German title: Detective on the High Seas ) after only 51 days 3.5 billion yen ($ 35.6 million).
Up to and including the seventh film was directed by Kenji Kodama, from the eighth to the 15th by Yasuichiro Yamamoto, and from the 16th film onwards, Kobun Shizuno took over the direction.
The German anime label Kazé (formerly Anime Virtual) released the first twelve films in chronological order from September 2007 to May 2009. Since then, another film has been released annually on DVD and, since the 14th film in 2011, also as Blu-ray. In 2018, Kazé began to post the missing 13 films on Blu-ray Disc (BD). The German version was produced by TV + Synchron Berlin up to the 21st film . As of film 22, Oxygen Sound Studios will - as with the series - take over the dubbing of the films.

Real film
Several live action films have been produced in Japan. The first aired on October 2, 2006 on Yomiuri TV and Nippon TV. The main actors were Shun Oguri as Shin'ichi Kudō, Tomoka Kurokawa as Ran Mōri and Takanori Jinnai as Kogorō Mōri.
The second film premiered on December 17, 2007. In addition to the main actors in the first film, Nao Fujisaki as Conan Edogawa (voice: Minami Takayama, 高山 み な み ), Kyoka Shibata ( 柴 田 杏花 ) as Ai Haibara, Yuu Kashii ( 香 椎 由 宇 ) as Shiho Miyano, Kuranosuke Sasaki ( 佐 佐之 介 ) as Gin and Ryōsei Tayama ( 田 山 涼 成 ) as Hiroshi Agasa in front of the camera.
On the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the detective Conan anime, it was announced in early 2011 that a third real film was in production. Junpei Mizobata ( 溝 端 淳 平 ) plays Shin'ichi's role, Shiori Kutsuna ( 忽 那 汐 里 ) acts as Ran and Sonoko is played by the actress Sayaka Akimoto ( 秋 元 才 加 ). The film ran on April 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Japanese time. The title songs are from the band DREAM (To You ...) and the singer yu-yu (Kimi to Zutto ...) .
In 2012, the fourth and currently last real film followed under the title Kudō Shin'ichi: Kyōto Shinsengumi Satsujin Jiken .
Other publications
Books
A colored artbook was published for the manga series .
So-called “ anime comics ” are also published for the anime series and the movies, 50 volumes of which were published in Japan between June 1996 and August 2000. Another five volumes followed later under the title Meitantei Konan: Itsutsu no Jūyō Shorui ( 名 探 偵 コ ナ ン ―5 つ の 重要 書 類 ). A movie guide has also been published for the films.
In August and September 2015, Egmont Manga published the anime comic for the seventeenth feature film in the series, and the anime comics for the eighteenth feature film in the series were also released in October and November of the same year.
music
Japan
There are currently 50 opening credits and 59 closing credits, often sung by famous Japanese musicians such as B'z , Garnet Crow , Mai Kuraki and ZARD . Almost each of the tracks was then released about a month after its first use in the opening or closing credits on a single, which regularly landed in the Japanese top 10 Oricon single charts; the rest on albums by the artists concerned or the five "The Best of Detective Conan" albums.

Germany
For the German version, however, these songs were not taken over, but for the German nine opening credits and two ending credits, the Toyco studio is largely responsible. The song Love Can't Wait was set to music by the dubbing studio MME Studios itself. The first German detective Conan soundtrack CD was released on May 19, 2006 in Germany. It is published by Sony BMG and contains, among other things, all German opening and closing songs. In addition, there are some extended versions of individual songs on the CD that have been shortened for use as an intro song.

Video games
Several Detective Conan video games have appeared in Japan for WonderSwan , WonderSwan Color , Game Boy , Game Boy Color , Game Boy Advance , Nintendo DS , Nintendo 3DS , Wii , PlayStation and PlayStation 2 .
On January 29, 2009, the first and so far only German video game adaptation for the Nintendo Wii appeared under the title Detective Conan: The Mirapolis Investigation . The game is approved for ages 12 and up in Germany.
Economic success and awards
Detective Conan is one of the most successful manga series in Japan. By mid-2007, 120 million volumes of the manga had been sold in Japan alone.
The ninth detective Conan movie Suiheisen jō no Inbō ( 水平 線上 の 陰謀 , German title: The plot over the ocean ), played a total of about 2.2 billion yen (about 15.7 million euros ) and came in the ranking of most successful Japanese feature films in 2005 at number 11, and is therefore as successful as its predecessor films. The series received the 46th Shogakukan Manga Prize in the Shōnen category in 2001 .
Trivia
The great success also results from the realistic representation, as can be found in the chapter "Frag Holmes" in volume 71 and a. Faithful images of The Gherkin and City Hall (London) or the moon bear can be found in volumes 27 and 28. In addition, Japanese specialties are shown, such as: B. Katō Kiyomasa or the Shogi in the chapter "Chess" in Volume 85. The Japanese mythical creature Nue also comes to the fore in a story.
Although Conan himself is not musical, he has perfect pitch (mentioned in the 12th film, the perpetrator Takumi Fuwa also has perfect pitch). There are several allusions to the music itself, e.g. B. Seiji Aso (Seiji and Narumi identical in Kanji spelling ), who committed three murders under the guise of the three stanzas of the moonlight sonata or the appearance of the group Two-Mix in volume 15.
In the chapter “Genta's shot” in volume 55, the saying “The strongest doesn't always win, the winner is always the stronger” is mentioned in connection with a portrait of Franz Beckenbauer . Volume 30 contains a parody of Philip Marlowe and Humphrey Bogart in the form of the detective Harufumi Mogi.
The episodes at the Hanshin Kōshien Stadium are also a crossover with Gosho Aoyama's earlier manga series 3rd Base 4th (1993).
Anime episodes 31 and 89 are based on the detective Conan Short Stories offshoot. These "Short Stories" were not designed by Gosho Aoyama, but by his assistants.
