This article describes the results of the eliminations for the formation of the all-German team at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo .

basketball

The preliminary round between the two German basketball teams was played back and forth. The first leg took place on May 7th in Osnabrück's Schloßwallhalle and the second leg on May 10th in the (East) Berlin Central Club of Youth and Athletes . Both games were won by the East German selection with 81:53 and 77:60 respectively. She had thus qualified for a pre-Olympic basketball tournament that took place in Geneva from June 4th to 13th . There she could not qualify for the Olympic tournament.

Boxing

The elimination in boxing took place from May 28th to 31st in the (West) Berlin Sports Palace and on the Schwerin open-air stage. The final matches took place on May 30th in Schwerin and on May 31st in (West) Berlin.

fencing

There were two elimination tournaments on 4th / 5th. July in the DHfK in Leipzig and on 18./19. July in the congress hall in Bad Dürkheim , where each team fought against each other in the individual armed forces, with rankings being drawn up for the individual fighters. In the rematch in Bad Dürkheim, the East German foil gentlemen no longer competed after it had already been determined that all Olympic places in this discipline would go to West German fencers. In the three other disciplines of women's floret, epee and saber, the West German participants also achieved the first five places that entitle them to participate in the Olympics. The Olympic participants were then selected by the West German Fencing Association at their own discretion.

In Tokyo, Helga Mees won silver in the women's floret and the team bronze.

Soccer

The preliminary round between the two German soccer teams was played back and forth. These took place on September 15, 1963 in the Karl-Marx-Städter Ernst-Thälmann Stadium and on September 22, 1959 in the Hanover Lower Saxony Stadium. The first game was won 3-0 by the eastern selection and the second by the western selection 2-1. The East selection had thus qualified for one of the Olympic qualification groups in which they could qualify for the Olympics. There she won bronze.

Weightlifting

The elimination in weightlifting took place on June 5th in the Musensaal of the Mannheim rose garden and on June 20th in the House of the Cheerful Muse in Leipzig.

hockey

The elimination between the two German hockey teams was played back and forth. The first leg took place on May 31st in the (West) Berlin Olympic Stadium and the second leg on June 14th in Jena . The first leg won the West selection 4-2, while the East selection won the second leg 1-0. Since each team had won a game, two more games were scheduled, which again took place on July 1st in Jena and on July 5th in the (West) Berlin Olympic Stadium. The first game won the East Selection 4-2, while the second game ended 2-2. The East German team was thus directly qualified for the Olympics. There she finished fifth undefeated.

Judo

The judo elimination took place on April 4th in the Hansehalle in Lübeck and on April 5th in the Marienehe sports hall in Rostock .

Canoe racing

The elimination was held in two regattas on September 12th on the Mittelland Canal near Magdeburg and on September 17th on the Duisburg regatta course . The boats with the lowest number of places qualified for the Olympics. The first four-kayak race was held on September 10th on the (East) Berlin regatta course in Grünau with consideration for Günter Perleberg , who fled his hometown Magdeburg to the west in 1963.

Modern pentathlon

Two modern pentathlon competitions were held from June 12th to 16th in Halle and Leipzig and from July 5th to 9th in Warendorf . The scores achieved were added up. The three best participants qualified for the Olympics, the fourth became a substitute.

Cycling

train

There were two eliminations on August 8 or 9 in Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim and on August 16 on the Alfred-Rosch-Kampfbahn in Leipzig . Because after that the decisions in tandem driving and in the 4,000-meter team pursuit were still open, two more eliminations took place for these two competitions on September 19 in Cologne and on September 20 in Leipzig.

1000 meter time trial

In both Ludwigshafen and Leipzig, the West German Lothar Claesges won with 1: 10.37 min and 1: 09.15 min and was thus qualified for Tokyo. There he took 6th place.

Driving 1000 meters

Three drivers each from East and West competed individually in East-West duels in Ludwigshafen and Leipzig. The West German Willi Fuggerer won with 5: 1 wins ahead of the West German Ulrich Schillinger with 4: 2 wins. Both were qualified for Tokyo, where Fuggerer was eliminated in the quarter-finals and Schillinger in the second round.

4000 meters individual pursuit

In both eliminations, this discipline was held as an individual time trial. In Ludwigshafen the West German Lothar Spiegelberg won ahead of the West German Lothar Claesges , in Leipzig the order was reversed. Spiegelberg, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals, was nominated for Tokyo.

tandem

Two tandems from east and west each competed individually in an east-west duel in Ludwigshafen and Leipzig. After the two eliminations, both the East German Hans-Jürgen Klunker / Wolfgang Tertschek and the West German Willi Fuggerer / Klaus Kobusch had 3-1 victories on their account. In the other two eliminations between these two tandems, Fuggerer / Kobusch won 2-0 runs in Cologne and, after winning the first run in Leipzig, qualified for Tokyo. There they won bronze.

4000 meters team pursuit

In the eliminations, this discipline was held as an individual time trial. In Ludwigshafen the West German foursome won in 4: 35.50 minutes, while in Leipzig the East German foursome won in 4: 33.74 minutes. In each of the two other eliminations, the West German foursome won. This always drove in the line-up of Lothar Claesges , Karl-Heinz Henrichs , Karl Link , Ernst Streng and won gold in Tokyo.

The East German four started in Ludwigsburg with Bernd Barleben , Jürgen Kißner , Siegfried Köhler and Wolfgang Schmelzer . From Leipzig Erhard Hancke then drove for Barleben. In Cologne, Kissner left his team and stayed in the west. Hartmut Scholz then drove there for Kissner. In Leipzig, instead of Scholz, Rudolf Franz drove .

Street

There were two elimination races, on July 5th around Gießen (186 km) and on July 12th around Erfurt (174 km). The winner received 30 evaluation points, the second 29 evaluation points, etc. The first five riders in the overall standings qualified for the Olympics or acquired the right to start for their respective cycling association.

The East German Equestrian Association waived the scheduled elimination, so that the riders were nominated by the West German Equestrian Association. Harry Boldt won silver in Tokyo, Josef Neckermann took 5th place and Reiner Klimke took 6th place. The team won gold.

Military

Without elimination, two riders from the east and two from the west were nominated. West German Fritz Ligges won bronze in Tokyo, Horst Karsten (w) placed 6th, Gerhard Schulz (o) 20th and Karl-Heinz Fuhrmann (o) 25th. The team won bronze.

Hunting jumping

On May 31 and June 3, two laps were ridden on the cycling track in (East) Berlin-Weißensee and in the (West) Berlin Olympic Stadium . Four riders from east and west took part with two horses each, so that 16 rides were scheduled per round. For each venue, the best rider-horse combination was included in the rating.

The elimination of sails was carried out in two series of races from July 19 to 26 at Rostock-Warnemünde and from August 1 to 7 at Lübeck-Travemünde . The two results were added together and the boat with the highest points qualified for the Olympics.

Finn dinghy

The elimination was won by the East German Horst Herrmann , who was only taken to Tokyo as a substitute sailor. Was nominated for the Olympics by the East German Sailing Association Bernd Dehmel , who had not sailed in the elimination races to win, but had contracted on the basis of a coordinated approach of the East German sailors, West German European champion and Goldcupgewinner Wilhelm Kuhweide should receive adequate for development. Kuhweide then gave up in Travemünde after the fifth race and the other West German sailors did not compete out of solidarity with him. Since no German volleyball team met the criteria of the International Volleyball Association for participation in the Olympic Games, neither for men nor for women , there was no reason for an internal German volleyball elimination.

Water polo

There were two qualifying matches that on May 16 in the same swimming pool in Magdeburg on 24 May in the Schwimmoper in Wuppertal took place.
