Edward Curtis (politician)

Edward Curtis (born October 25, 1801 in Windsor , Vermont , † August 2, 1856 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Edward Curtis was born in Windsor in the early 19th century. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1821 . Curtis studied law and began practicing law in New York City after receiving his license to practice law. In 1834 he was a member of the Common Council and was then elected President on the Board of Assistant Aldermen . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional elections of 1836 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Churchill C. Cambreleng , Gideon Lee and John McKeon , who previously together, on March 4, 1837 represented the third district in the US House of Representatives. After a successful re-election in 1838 , he left the Congress on March 3, 1841 . During his time as a congressman, he presided over the Committee on Commerce ( 26th Congress ). On March 18, 1841, he was appointed tax collector in the Port of New York , a position he held until July 7, 1844. He then worked as a lawyer in Washington DC. He died on August 2, 1856 in New York City. His final resting place is unknown.
